The call

MYOB stays locked into Australian tax and payroll compliance work while Xero keeps taking new customers and KKR looks for an exit.

MYOB makes bookkeeping and tax software for small businesses and accountants in Australia and New Zealand. It is hard to replace because it knows Australian tax rules (ATO, GST, superannuation) that competitors have to learn, and 1.2 million customers plus 40,000 accountants rely on it every day. But Xero already won the market race with more than 60% of customers, and Xero built its software for the cloud from the start while MYOB had to catch up. The company's new owner (KKR) is trying to sell it in 2026, which means the new buyer could fire people, merge it with something else, or change the plan entirely, and that unknown change could reshape everything.

Why
01
AI pressure: Xero AI features and emerging AI bookkeeping agents (e.g. from Intuit, Sage). AI-driven bookkeeping automation could cut demand for manual entry tools MYOB still sells to smaller clients. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Xero. Xero already holds over 60% of the Australian cloud accounting market and keeps adding new customers MYOB doesn't win back. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep hooks into ATO tax filing, STP payroll and GST/BAS compliance make switching costly for accountants and businesses.

Questions people ask
Is MYOB profitable in 2026?
No audited public financials exist since MYOB delisted from the ASX in May 2019 under KKR ownership. IBISWorld estimates MYOB Group generated about A$671.7 million revenue in 2024/2025, but profitability figures are not publicly disclosed by the company itself.
Who owns MYOB?
MYOB has been owned by global private equity firm KKR since it completed a take-private acquisition on May 8, 2019 via KKR's Asian Fund III, delisting MYOB from the ASX at A$3.40 per share.
Is MYOB up for sale in 2026?
KKR was reportedly preparing a multibillion-dollar sale process for MYOB as of October 2, 2025, targeting Australian and North American buyers. By May 28, 2026, Macquarie Capital and Jefferies were seen as favorites to lead a likely trade sale, though KKR denied formally launching it.
Could AI replace MYOB's software?
MYOB CEO Paul Robson stated on April 21, 2026 that MYOB intends AI to handle the bulk of the compliance and bookkeeping work it was founded to do, but its ATO/STP/BAS/GST regulatory integrations and 1.2 million-plus customer base create switching costs generic AI tools cannot easily replicate.
Is MYOB's biggest competitor Xero?
