The call

N-able still runs a profitable, sticky business, but slowing growth, AI-driven labor cuts at its own customers, and a beaten-down stock make it a plausible takeover target.

N-able sells remote IT management software to thousands of IT support companies (called MSPs) who use it to monitor computers and servers for their clients. The software is sticky because these companies have built their whole operations around it, but N-able's growth has slowed to single digits while competitors like Atera and NinjaOne are growing faster, and new AI tools are starting to do some of the routine work that N-able's customers use it for. The one thing that could change everything is if artificial intelligence automates so much of the manual IT work that MSPs need far fewer tools overall, or if a large tech company like Microsoft pushes harder into this space with their own built-in management software.

Why
01
AI pressure: Agentic AI tools like Atera's Robin. Agentic AI automates the tier-1 patching and scripting work MSPs pay N-able to help manage, shrinking the job it was built for. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Intune and Defender). Microsoft's bundled endpoint tools creep into MSP workflows but haven't displaced N-able's core agent deployments yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep, hard to rip out agent installs across 500,000 client organizations that MSPs rely on daily.
What would change this call
N-able's Q2 2026 earnings report (expected around August 2026) shows constant-currency revenue growth below 4%. Would confirm continued deceleration and loss of relative growth versus peers.
A private equity firm announces a take-private bid or acquisition offer for N-able. Would confirm the SolarWinds-style buyout risk implied by depressed share price and index removal.
N-able names a new permanent CEO or CFO within the next 12 months. Would indicate whether recent executive departures reflect a completed reset or ongoing instability.
Key numbers
  • Stock near $2.92 to $4.90, down from $16 peak (2026)
  • ARR guidance cut to 8 to 9 percent growth (2026)
  • Gross margins around 81 percent on ~$580M ARR (2026)
Named risks
  • Take-private acquisition at low premium given SolarWinds 2025 precedent and depressed stock. Severity: high
  • Leadership churn: new CRO, new CAIO, board resignation all within May-July 2026. Severity: medium
  • AI-driven automation erodes labor-intensive tasks at N-able's own MSP customer base. Severity: medium
  • Decelerating growth (Q2 2026 revenue guided ~4% constant currency) in crowded, commoditizing RMM market. Severity: medium
  • Stock highly sensitive to unrelated sector news, e.g. 22% single-day drop on Gartner lawsuit, May 12, 2026. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is N-able profitable in 2026?
Not on a GAAP basis. As of May 2026 N-able's trailing twelve month P/E was negative, per MarketBeat. The company guided FY2026 adjusted EBITDA margin of 30-31% and ARR of $581M-$586M, per its February 19, 2026 results release, but GAAP profitability had not yet been achieved.
Could AI replace N-able?
Not directly, since N-able sells the endpoint agents and MSP infrastructure AI tools run on top of. The bigger risk is indirect: CEO John Pagliuca has framed strategy around automating work historically delivered through services, which also erodes labor-intensive tasks at N-able's own MSP customers, per the May 7, 2026 Q1 results call.
Is N-able's stock struggling in 2026?
Yes. Shares traded around $4.90-$5.00 on July 20, 2026, per GuruFocus, far below the 52-week high of $9.04 and all-time high of $16.00. N-able was also dropped from the Russell 2000 Defensive Index around June 29, 2026.
Who owns N-able?
N-able is an independent public company, NYSE: NABL, spun off from SolarWinds Corp on July 19, 2021. It has no parent company; as of May 11, 2026, 96.35% of shares were held by institutions, per MarketBeat.
Could N-able be taken private like SolarWinds was?
It's plausible but unconfirmed. SolarWinds, N-able's former parent, was taken private by Turn/River Capital for about $4.4B in April 2025. N-able's stock near multi-year lows and 96.35% institutional ownership (May 2026) fit a similar take-private profile, per market commentary, though no deal has been announced as of July 2026.
Who is N-able's biggest competitor?
Atera, Kaseya (including Datto), NinjaOne, ConnectWise, Syncro, and SuperOps all compete directly in RMM and MSP tooling. Atera markets itself as an agentic AI alternative and claims G2's number one AIOps ranking for 2026, per its own promotional blog dated April 15, 2026.
