The call

n8n's growth leans on SAP distribution and developer lock-in, while frontier AI labs build rival orchestration and repeated critical security flaws test its self-hosted trust story.

n8n lets developers build automated workflows without code, running on their own servers so data stays private. It is not easy to replace because it has 1.7 million open-source users and just partnered with SAP to embed its technology into their software. However, AI models like Claude and OpenAI are now building their own orchestration tools that could do similar work end-to-end, and n8n has had serious security flaws recently that undermine the trust that enterprises place in self-hosted software. The biggest question is whether SAP stays a true partner or acquires n8n outright and stops promoting it as a standalone product.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI AgentKit, Anthropic Claude Cowork, Zapier Agents. These labs and Zapier now ship hosted agent orchestration, the same job n8n workflows do, though so far they feed n8n more than replace it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: SAP. SAP invested and plans to embed n8n in Joule Studio by Q3 2026, but could later build its own orchestration or absorb n8n outright. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 1.7M monthly developers, 350+ integrations, and self-hosted data control make n8n workflows costly to rip out.
What would change this call
SAP Joule Studio reaches GA in Q3 2026 as planned. Confirms SAP distribution partnership is delivering, not stalling or being de-emphasized.
Another CVSS 9+ RCE or sandbox-escape disclosed for n8n in H2 2026. Would show self-host security trust moat continuing to erode with regulated customers.
OpenAI AgentKit or Anthropic Claude Cowork announces named enterprise wins for end-to-end orchestration. Would show frontier labs displacing n8n's orchestration layer rather than feeding it.
Key numbers
  • SAP investment lifted valuation to $5.2B (2026-05-12)
  • 1.7M monthly active developers, 1,400+ enterprise customers (2026-05-12)
  • 4th CVSS 9+ RCE patched in 9 months (2026-07-27)
Named risks
  • Four-plus CVSS 9+ RCE CVEs and a Jul 27, 2026 sandbox-escape patch undercut self-host trust moat. Severity: high
  • Frontier AI labs building end-to-end orchestration could bypass third-party automation tools. Severity: high
  • SAP partnership concentration risk: could shift from strategic ally to vertical-integration competitor or acquirer. Severity: medium
  • Revenue and growth figures are largely vendor-estimated or company-stated, not independently audited. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is n8n profitable in 2026?
n8n does not disclose profitability. Sacra estimated ARR around $40M by July 2025, and the company says revenue grew roughly 10x in 2025. It remains venture backed, having raised a $180M Series C in October 2025 and a SAP strategic investment in May 2026, suggesting it is still growth-funded rather than profit-funded.
Who owns n8n?
n8n GmbH is privately held, founded in Berlin in October 2019 by CEO Jan Oberhauser. Investors include Sequoia Capital, firstminute capital, Felicis Ventures, Highland Europe, Accel, and Nvidia's NVentures. SAP took a strategic minority equity stake on May 12, 2026, when the valuation doubled to $5.2 billion.
Could AI replace n8n?
AI models like Anthropic's Claude Cowork and OpenAI's AgentKit compete at the orchestration layer, but as of 2025 they fed n8n's growth rather than replacing it, with the company reporting roughly 10x revenue growth that year. n8n's open-source community (1.7M monthly builders, May 2026) and self-hosted data-sovereignty positioning remain harder for a model API to replicate quickly.
Who is n8n's biggest competitor?
Zapier is the scale competitor, with 7,000-8,000+ connected apps versus n8n's roughly 350-400 integrations as of mid-2026, and it has launched Zapier Agents/Central plus an MCP server. Frontier AI labs (OpenAI's AgentKit, Anthropic's Claude Cowork) and SAP itself, now also an investor, are also cited as competitive or vertical-integration risks.
How much is n8n worth?
n8n was valued at $5.2 billion as of May 12, 2026, after SAP made a strategic minority investment that doubled its prior $2.5 billion valuation from the October 9, 2025 Series C, a $180M round led by Accel with participation from Nvidia's NVentures.
Is n8n's self-hosted platform secure enough for enterprises?
n8n has disclosed multiple CVSS 9+ remote code execution vulnerabilities in 2025-2026 (including CVE-2025-68613, CVE-2026-21858, CVE-2026-21877, CVE-2026-33660), and on July 27, 2026 patched a sandbox-escape flaw (GHSA-gv7g-jm28-cr3m, CVSS 8.7) found by Security Joes just days earlier. This disclosure cadence pressures its data-sovereignty trust pitch.
