Nautilus Biotechnology
Pre-revenue biotech building Voyager, a single-molecule protein-sequencing instrument.
Nautilus has real science and cash to reach its 2027 launch, but zero sales capacity and no independent benchmark leave the outcome to execution, not any protection from Thermo Fisher or AI.
Nautilus Biotechnology built a machine called Voyager that reads proteins one at a time, a technique called single-molecule proteomics. The company has solid research backing and real patents, but it has not sold anything yet even though it went public five years ago, and its money runs out almost exactly when it plans to start selling in mid-2027. Copying this technology is hard because it requires deep science and custom equipment, but Thermo Fisher (which already dominates protein testing) could enter this market anytime, and smaller rivals like Quantum-Si and Seer are already shipping their own versions. The one thing that could save Nautilus is if actual customers outside of research grants place real orders in early 2027 and stick around to buy more, proving the machine actually works better than competitors in the real world.
Named commercial pre-orders (10+ sites) beyond grant-funded partners by late 2026. Would show real paying-customer demand rather than subsidized early access.
Thermo Fisher announces or acquires a single-molecule proteomics platform. Would show the dominant incumbent moving directly into Nautilus's market.
- $143.4M cash and investments as of Q1 2026
- FY2025 net loss $59.0M, down from $70.8M
- FY2026 revenue guided at just $0.5M
- Cash runway extends only into 2027, same window as guided H1 2027 commercial launch.
- Zero sales capacity confirmed as of Q4 2025 earnings call ahead of planned 2026 pre-orders.
- No independent third-party benchmark yet validates Voyager's claimed performance advantage.
- Prior Nasdaq delisting notice for sub-$1.00 bid price shows fragile compliance margin.
- Major early backer Andreessen Horowitz selling shares in block trades through mid-2026.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum-Si | losing to | Quantum-Si's Platinum is the only commercially shipping single-molecule protein sequencer as of 2026 |
| Seer Inc | losing to | Seer's Proteograph cited in 58+ published papers as of 2025, ahead in adoption |
| Thermo Fisher | contesting | Owns mass-spec gold standard and Olink, no structural barrier to entering single-molecule proteomics |
| SomaLogic | losing to | SomaScan shows 10,000+ protein coverage per independent 2025-01-07 benchmark |
- Is Nautilus Biotechnology profitable in 2026?
- No. Nautilus reported a $14.7M net loss in Q1 2026 alone, following a $59.0M full-year loss in 2025. Management guided to only about $0.5M in total FY2026 revenue, mostly from grant funding, as stated June 2, 2026.
- Has Nautilus Biotechnology had layoffs?
- Yes. In February 2025, Nautilus cut 16% of its workforce, reducing headcount from 158 to 133 employees, explicitly to extend cash runway into 2027. Headcount stood at 127 as of March 31, 2026.
- Who is Nautilus Biotechnology's biggest competitor?
- Quantum-Si already ships a commercial single-molecule protein sequencer, Seer's Proteograph has appeared in 58+ papers, and Thermo Fisher owns the mass-spec gold standard plus Olink. As of July 2026, Nautilus's Voyager platform has not yet launched commercially.
- Could AI replace Nautilus Biotechnology?
- Not directly. Nautilus's core value is physical wet-lab measurement of proteins via its Voyager instrument, which AI software cannot replicate. It does use machine learning internally to convert raw binding data into protein identifications, described as part of its pipeline as of February 24, 2026.
- Who owns Nautilus Biotechnology?
- Nautilus is a public company on Nasdaq under ticker NAUT. Andreessen Horowitz-affiliated funds remain a major holder near 10%, despite selling roughly 5M shares in block trades on June 2, 2026 at $2.35 and June 26, 2026 at $2.00.
- When will Nautilus Biotechnology launch its Voyager product commercially?
- Per April 27, 2026 guidance, Nautilus expects pre-orders in late 2026, customer installations starting early 2027, and broad-scale commercial availability in H1 2027, coinciding closely with its projected cash runway limit.
