The call

SoundCloud finally turned a small profit after 16 years, but its owners are still shopping it for sale while AI music tools close in from the other side.

SoundCloud lets independent artists upload music, connect with fans, and get paid directly, competing with Spotify and Apple Music in the independent artist space. It is hard to copy because artists and their fans are already there and comfortable, but not impossible to copy, Spotify and YouTube could do exactly what SoundCloud does if they wanted to, and AI music generators like Suno and Udio could flood the platform with cheap fake songs that make it harder for real artists to stand out. The one thing that could change everything is who actually buys the company: a new owner focused on profit might cut costs and lose the trust of the artists who make SoundCloud special, or a major music company might turn it into just another distribution tool rather than a community.

Why
01
AI pressure: Suno and Udio (AI music generators). AI tools can already generate full tracks; if they add hosting and payouts, they compete directly with SoundCloud, not just feed it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music. None of them are barred from courting indie artists and DJ culture, they've just chosen not to build it yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Fan-Powered Royalties and label deals with Warner Music and Merlin give artists a real reason to stay and get paid.
What would change this call
SoundCloud's pending sale (since early 2024) closes and acquirer type is disclosed. A PE buyer signals cost-stripping ahead; a strategic buyer signals mission continuity.
SoundCloud publishes audited 2026 full-year revenue matching one figure in the $84.5M-$485M range. Resolves whether financial reporting is trustworthy or still murky.
Suno or Udio launches native hosting/distribution/payment features. Would shift AI tools from feeding SoundCloud's catalog to replacing its core function.
Key numbers
  • First-ever annual profit: €2M EBITDA on €288M revenue (2023)
  • 787 employees, up 16.6% year over year (Dec 2025)
  • 56% of artists earn more under Fan-Powered Royalties (May 2026)
Named risks
  • Two-plus year unresolved $1B+ sale process by Raine and Temasek could end in PE-driven cost-stripping restructuring. Severity: high
  • Conflicting 2025 revenue estimates ranging $84.5M to $485M signal lack of financial transparency. Severity: medium
  • Razor-thin €2M EBITDA on €288M revenue (2023) leaves little buffer against further shocks. Severity: medium
  • AI training TOS controversy (2024-2025) shows fragility of artist trust, could recur amid ongoing AI-music industry disputes. Severity: medium
  • Moat is cultural and financial, not structural; incumbents like YouTube could ship a serious open-upload feature. Severity: high

Questions people ask
Is SoundCloud profitable in 2026?
SoundCloud hit its first-ever annual EBITDA profit of just €2 million on €288 million revenue in 2023, its first profitable year in 16 years of operation. No audited 2024-2026 figures have been confirmed publicly as of July 2026, and third-party 2025 revenue estimates range wildly from $84.5M to $485M.
Who owns SoundCloud?
The Raine Group and Temasek Holdings have held majority ownership of SoundCloud since a $169.5 million Series F rescue financing in August 2017. As of July 22, 2026, they remain majority owners and have reportedly been shopping a $1 billion-plus sale since early 2024 with no deal closed.
Could AI replace SoundCloud?
AI threatens SoundCloud's creation layer, not its hosting business directly. A February 2024 terms-of-service change let SoundCloud use uploads to train AI, triggering backlash; by May 14, 2025 CEO Eliah Seton reversed course, committing to an opt-in model after public artist outrage.
Who is SoundCloud's biggest competitor?
SoundCloud competes with Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music for listener attention, and more directly with Bandcamp and Audiomack for the open-upload independent-artist niche. Bandcamp was gutted after a 2023 sale to Songtradr, while Spotify has built Discovery Mode and a DistroKid partnership targeting the same indie creators.
Has SoundCloud been sold?
No. As of July 22, 2026, no sale has closed despite Raine Group and Temasek reportedly exploring a $1 billion-plus sale since early 2024, per pe-insights.com reporting; the company instead made its first acquisition since 2022, buying Nina Protocol on July 22, 2026.
What did SoundCloud recently acquire?
On July 22, 2026, SoundCloud acquired Nina Protocol, a decentralized independent-artist platform that had wound down operations, gaining its editorial archive and offering migration paths plus free Artist Pro trials to Nina's community. Deal terms were undisclosed.
