The call

NC just bounced back on old IP and one big launch after its worst year in over a decade, with Nexon and Krafton still setting the pace.

NCsoft makes online multiplayer games, mostly Lineage and Aion, that have loyal players paying to play for decades. The company is harder to replace than most because millions of players have time and money invested in these games, but bigger competitors like Nexon and Krafton have been stealing players and money over the last two years, and new AI-powered games are offering fresh alternatives. The real test comes in the second half of 2026 when their new Aion 2 game launches: if it keeps players interested and spending money, NCsoft could stabilize; if players skip it and go back to older games instead of trying new ones, the company will shrink into a caretaker of aging franchises.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. NC built its own AI unit, NC AI, for internal tools; no outside AI product is shown eating its player base yet. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nexon and Krafton. Nexon's scale and Krafton's aggressive spending pulled Korean MMO revenue and attention away from NC through 2023 to 2025. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Decades of paying Lineage and Aion players who keep spending inside NC's own worlds rather than leaving.

Questions people ask
Is NCsoft profitable in 2026?
Yes, after a rough 2024, NCsoft posted Q1 2026 revenue of KRW 557.4 billion (up 55% YoY) and operating profit of KRW 113.3 billion, up over 2,000% YoY, driven by AION 2 and Lineage Classic launches, per its May 13, 2026 earnings release.
Who owns NCsoft?
NCsoft is publicly traded on the KOSDAQ (036570) with no controlling shareholder. Founder Kim Taek-jin holds about 12%, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund about 9.26-10.5% since 2022, and rival Netmarble holds roughly 8.9-10% via a 2015 defensive share swap, as of July 2026.
Is NCsoft losing to Nexon and Krafton?
Yes, by 2026 industry framing shifted from the old '3N' (Nexon, Netmarble, NCsoft) to an 'NK' duo of Nexon and Krafton. Nexon topped KRW 4 trillion in 2025 sales and Krafton hit KRW 3.33 trillion, both ahead of NCsoft's KRW 1.51 trillion FY2025 revenue.
Did NCsoft have layoffs?
Yes. NCsoft West cut about 20% of staff in February 2023, and in October 2024 the company began voluntary retirement programs alongside a corporate split into four subsidiaries, with headquarters headcount targeted to fall from the mid-4,000s to roughly 3,000 by 2025.
Could AI replace NCsoft's game developers?
Unlikely to replace outright. NCsoft's former president Songyee Yoon said in March 2026 that AI has long been used internally for character modeling and quest scripting, and NCsoft spun off NC AI in February 2025 to scale its VARCO LLM, but live MMO operations and IP remain human-driven moats.
What is NCsoft's biggest competitor?
Nexon and Krafton are NCsoft's biggest rivals as of 2026. Nexon leads Korea's gaming sector with over KRW 4 trillion in 2025 sales, while Krafton, the PUBG owner, posted KRW 3.33 trillion revenue and is described as the most aggressive Korean adopter of AI in game development.
