The call

Neo4j leads graph databases and rides the GraphRAG wave, but a falling secondary valuation and stalled IPO plans shadow its technical position.

Neo4j sells software that helps companies organize and search through connected data (like social networks or supply chains). It is hard to replace because 84 big Fortune 100 companies use it in production, and it uses a standardized language called GQL that locks customers into the Neo4j world. However, three things create real uncertainty: first, the company is worth roughly half what investors paid for it two years ago, second, newer competitors like FalkorDB and Memgraph are posting better speed benchmarks, and third, AI companies like OpenAI and Google are building tools that can do simple knowledge-graph work without needing Neo4j at all. The biggest question mark is whether Neo4j can hit its next yearly revenue target (expected around November) and prove it is still growing strongly enough to justify an IPO and repay investors.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google frontier-lab RAG frameworks. GraphRAG needs a knowledge graph layer, which feeds Neo4j demand now, but frontier labs could fold simple graph construction into their own tools later. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AWS Neptune and Microsoft Fabric. Both offer graph features inside their clouds, but neither has taken meaningful share from Neo4j's installed base yet. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 84 of the Fortune 100 run production workloads on Neo4j, and its Cypher language became the ISO GQL standard, raising switching costs.
What would change this call
Neo4j files an S-1 or confirms/denies the ~$0.9B secondary valuation via a new funding round. Would show whether investor confidence has actually declined or the discount was overstated.
Microsoft ships a native graph engine in Fabric that customers adopt for workloads Neo4j currently serves. Would show a hyperscaler moving from coexistence to active displacement.
Neo4j's November ARR update shows growth rate deceleration or a miss versus prior trajectory. Would show whether GenAI investment is converting to revenue or stalling.

Questions people ask
Is Neo4j profitable in 2026?
Neo4j said in November 2024 it was on track to become cash-flow positive in the coming quarters, and it had just surpassed $200 million ARR after doubling revenue over three years. No independent GAAP profitability confirmation has been published as of mid-2026 (vendor-claimed).
Is Neo4j going to IPO?
Bloomberg reported since February 2024 that Neo4j was preparing for a Nasdaq listing, and CEO Emil Eifrem reiterated this in November 2024. As of mid-2026, no S-1 has been filed and no IPO date has been set, per Forge Global's June 2025 report.
Who owns Neo4j?
Neo4j is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Eurazeo, GV (Alphabet), One Peak Partners, Lightrock, and DTCP from its $325 million Series F round (June 2021) that pushed valuation above $2 billion.
Could AI replace Neo4j?
Neo4j argues GraphRAG architectures require its knowledge-graph layer rather than eliminate it, backed by a $100 million GenAI investment (October 2, 2025) and Aura Agent. Simple RAG/vector use cases are being commoditized by frontier labs, but Neo4j claims (vendor-claimed) 230% ROI in a May 2026 IDC study.
Who is Neo4j's biggest competitor?
Amazon Neptune and Microsoft Fabric are longstanding hyperscaler graph offerings that haven't displaced Neo4j, while newer entrants FalkorDB and Memgraph are benchmarked (July 2026) as outperforming Neo4j on raw throughput in some workloads.
What is Neo4j's revenue?
Neo4j announced (vendor-claimed) surpassing $200 million in annual recurring revenue on November 19, 2024, having doubled ARR over the prior three years, and claimed a 44% share of the graph database category per Cupole Consulting Group analysis.
