The call

Neste holds real refining technology and government backing, but oil majors are already producing renewable diesel at scale and margins still swing with oil shocks.

Neste turns crude oil into renewable diesel and sustainable jet fuel at refineries around the world. The company has real advantages like long-standing relationships with suppliers, industry certifications, and experience making jet fuel, but these edges are shrinking because Chevron, Shell, and other giant oil companies are now producing the same renewable diesel products at large scale. The biggest question is whether Neste can keep its profit margins high when these competitors ramp up production, especially since profits depend heavily on government policies and oil prices that swing up and down.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI product replaces refining capacity or feedstock logistics; AI mainly helps Neste run its own plants and trading desks. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Chevron/REG's Diamond Green Diesel, Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil renewable diesel units. Oil majors already run renewable diesel plants at scale in the US and Europe, competing directly for the same feedstock and credits. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Proprietary NEXBTL process, long-run feedstock contracts, certifications, and a 44% Finnish state stake backing capital access.
What would change this call
Diamond Green Diesel or Chevron/REG announce new North American renewable diesel capacity online in 2026. Would show rivals converting capacity into real volume that can take share from Neste.
Neste's H2 2026 EBITDA margins reported without Middle East supply shock tailwind. Would show whether Neste's record margins were structural or a temporary geopolitical effect.
Rotterdam refinery flaring injunction outcome and 2027 expansion completion status. Would show whether legal/regulatory friction is delaying Neste's own capacity growth.

Questions people ask
Is Neste profitable in 2026?
Yes. Neste posted a record comparable EBITDA of €1,203 million in Q2 2026, up from €4,511 million revenue year-earlier to €5,987 million, driven largely by Middle East supply disruption. However, revenue missed analyst forecasts (€6.0B vs €7.2B expected) and shares fell 8-10% on the July 24, 2026 print.
Who owns Neste Corporation?
The Finnish state, via the Prime Minister's Office, owned 44.22% of Neste as of April 8, 2026, making it the controlling shareholder of the Nasdaq Helsinki-listed company (ticker NESTE).
Is Neste laying off employees?
Yes. Neste cut headcount from 5,481 to 4,848 employees between end-2024 and end-2025, including a 2025 redundancy round eliminating about 510 positions globally (370 in Finland), part of a broader cost-cutting program concluded July 2025.
Who is Neste's biggest competitor in renewable diesel?
Diamond Green Diesel (Valero/Darling Ingredients JV) and Chevron, which acquired Renewable Energy Group in 2022, are the closest scaled competitors, alongside Shell, TotalEnergies, and ExxonMobil, which launched its Esso Renewable Diesel R20 in August 2024.
Could AI replace Neste's business?
No. Neste's revenue comes from physical refining, feedstock logistics, and regulatory-credit capture, not knowledge work AI displaces. AI mainly touches back-office and forecasting functions; core moats are NEXBTL refining tech, physical assets, and feedstock certifications as of 2026.
Is Neste stock safe to invest in?
Neste's shares collapsed 62% in 2024, the worst performer in the Stoxx 600, prompting short-seller scrutiny of CEO Heikki Malinen in early 2025. Q2 2026 record EBITDA still came with a revenue miss and an 8-10% share drop on July 24, 2026.
