The call

Net-a-Porter is the shrinking half of a merger, losing sales while its luxury brand suppliers build their own stores to sell around it.

Net-a-Porter is an online store that sells designer clothes and accessories from many luxury brands in one place. It is getting harder to copy because luxury companies like LVMH and Gucci are now selling directly to customers on their own websites instead of using middlemen like Net-a-Porter, which means fewer products for the marketplace to sell and fewer reasons for shoppers to visit. The company is also struggling with old technology systems and just laid off over 700 workers. The one thing that could turn this around is if Net-a-Porter can stop losing customers in the next few quarters and if its parent company can make the business profitable again, but right now its sister company Mytheresa is growing while Net-a-Porter keeps shrinking.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI shopping agents (Google Gemini, OpenAI shopping, Perplexity) that compare and buy across sites. AI agents could route shoppers straight to brand sites or cheaper resellers, cutting out Net-a-Porter's curation layer. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: LVMH, Kering and Richemont's own maisons building direct to consumer stores and apps. Luxury houses are pulling stock from wholesale to sell themselves, starving Net-a-Porter of the inventory it needs to survive. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Editorial styling, personal shopper relationships and VIP client history that took decades to build.

Questions people ask
Is Net-a-Porter profitable in 2026?
Not on its own. Its parent LuxExperience posted a group-wide adjusted EBITDA margin of just 0.9% in Q3 FY2026 (May 2026), while the Net-a-Porter/Mr Porter segment saw net sales fall 11% in 2024 to about 1.2bn euros and were projected to fall another 11% in FY2025.
Who owns Net-a-Porter now?
Net-a-Porter is owned by LuxExperience B.V. (NYSE: LUXE), formed 24 April 2025 when Mytheresa completed its acquisition of YOOX Net-a-Porter Group from Richemont, which received a 33% Mytheresa equity stake in exchange.
Is Net-a-Porter shrinking or growing?
Shrinking. Combined Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter net sales fell 11% in 2024 to about 1.2bn euros and were projected to fall another 11% in FY2025 to roughly 1bn euros, according to restructuring disclosures reported in September 2025.
Is Mytheresa beating Net-a-Porter within the same company?
Yes. In Q3 FY2026 (reported May 2026), sibling brand Mytheresa was called the group's strongest performer with net sales up 9.9% at constant currency (US sales up 33.8%), while Net-a-Porter/Mr Porter kept declining.
Could AI replace Net-a-Porter's personal shoppers?
Not according to LuxExperience CEO Michael Kliger, who said in June 2026 that human clienteling for top VIP customers is deliberately kept separate from AI ('the human touch makes a huge difference'), even as AI automates marketing and engineering tasks.
Has Net-a-Porter had layoffs?
Yes. LuxExperience announced in September 2025 a restructuring plan affecting up to 700 employees across Italy, the UK and the US as Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter integrate onto Mytheresa's shared technology platform.
