The call

Niantic Spatial has cash, old game data, and pilot deals, but no paying customers yet while Google ships the same maps for free.

Niantic Spatial spun off in May 2025 to build indoor and GPS-poor location mapping for machines and workers. It has a huge collection of 30 billion images from Pokemon GO and early customer talks with companies like ExxonMobil and the Army, but Google is shipping its own competing location tool (ARCore) in June 2026 with its AI assistant Gemini built in, which works in 87 countries and has all of Google's engineering muscle behind it. The real test is whether Niantic can turn those pilot projects into actual paying customers and keep them paying year after year, because right now nobody knows if the company has real business traction or just promising partnerships.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini integrated into ARCore Geospatial API. Google's Gemini-powered ARCore now handles geospatial localization at global scale, undercutting Niantic Spatial's core pitch. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google (Android XR and ARCore ecosystem). Google ships free geospatial APIs across 87+ countries, leaving Niantic Spatial to fight for narrow indoor and private-data niches. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 30 billion image dataset from a decade of Pokemon GO players walking real-world streets, indoors and out.
What would change this call
ExxonMobil, Army DevX, or Coco Robotics pilots convert to disclosed multi-million-dollar paid contracts. Shows Niantic Spatial's tech is moving from pilot stage to real paying enterprise revenue.
Google ships private/indoor data ingestion into ARCore Geospatial API. Would erase Niantic's claimed product gap advantage over Google's global-scale platform.
8th Wall service fully shuts down as scheduled in early 2027. Confirms contraction of Niantic's existing AR developer tools business.
Key numbers
  • $250M capitalization at May 2025 spinout (2025-05-29)
  • $3.5B Pokemon GO sale to Scopely (2025-05-29)
  • $0 disclosed revenue since spinout (2026-07-22)
Named risks
  • Zero disclosed revenue at Niantic Spatial despite $250M capitalization and pilot slate. Severity: high
  • Google shipping free, globally scaled ARCore Geospatial API plus Gemini directly overlaps core offering. Severity: high
  • Leadership transition with new CEO Inhi Cho Suh starting March 2026 amid strategic pivot. Severity: medium
  • Privacy scrutiny over repurposing decade of Pokemon GO player camera data for commercial/military AI training. Severity: medium
  • 8th Wall shutdown, full closure early 2027, could cause developer churn. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Niantic Spatial profitable in 2026?
No confirmed revenue has been disclosed. Niantic Spatial was spun out on May 29, 2025 with $250M in capitalization and has since announced pilots with ExxonMobil, the Army, and NVIDIA, but no paying-customer or revenue figures have been made public as of July 2026.
What happened to Pokemon GO and does Niantic still own it?
Niantic sold its games division, including Pokemon GO, to Scopely for $3.5B cash in a deal that closed May 29, 2025. Pokemon GO generated over $520M in 2024 IAP revenue and now sits under Scopely, not Niantic Spatial.
Who owns Niantic now?
Legacy Niantic split in 2025. The games business (Pokemon GO, Pikmin Bloom, Monster Hunter Now) is owned by Scopely as of May 29, 2025. The AR/mapping technology continues as the privately held Niantic Spatial, Inc, backed by original investors plus Snap's June 2025 investment.
Could Google replace Niantic Spatial's geospatial AI business?
Google's ARCore Geospatial API with Gemini integration shipped for Android XR in June 2026, covering 87+ countries for free. Niantic Spatial's edge is ingesting private, indoor, and GPS-degraded data Google's public Street View doesn't cover, a product gap rather than a structural barrier.
Who is Niantic Spatial's biggest competitor?
Google's ARCore Geospatial API is the largest incumbent threat, shipping Gemini-integrated AR anchoring across 87+ countries in June 2026. Snap is a coopetitor, both a rival AR platform and, since June 2025, an undisclosed strategic investor in Niantic Spatial.
Who is Niantic Spatial's CEO?
Inhi Cho Suh became CEO of Niantic Spatial on March 30, 2026, after founder John Hanke stepped aside to become Executive Chairman, a leadership transition occurring alongside the company's pivot to enterprise geospatial AI and robotics.
