The call

NIIT keeps growing headline revenue through acquisitions and AI relabeling while its core training business faces flat demand and thin margins.

NIIT teaches coding and tech skills to students and helps companies hire fresh graduates, but the core product is becoming obsolete. ChatGPT, Claude, and similar free AI tools can now teach coding and answer technical questions better than NIIT's standardized classes, and students are using them instead of paying for courses. NIIT is trying to stay alive by buying smaller training companies and rebranding itself as an AI trainer, but its underlying business (money from actual students and employers) is flat or shrinking. The real test comes in the next few quarters: if NIIT's own revenue (not counting companies it buys) stays stalled while employers hire fewer entry-level tech workers, the company will have become a hollow shell held together only by past deals.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and similar frontier LLMs. Free chatbots now tutor code and explain concepts directly, undercutting the paid standardized courses NIIT sells. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: UpGrad, Simplilearn, Great Learning, Emeritus. Bigger, better-funded ed-tech rivals compete for the same enterprise skilling and placement contracts NIIT relies on. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Decades of enterprise and BFSI training relationships plus placement networks still bring in repeat institutional business.
What would change this call
NIIT's Q2 FY27 results (due ~October 2026) show organic revenue growth turning positive versus flat/negative prior quarters. Would show core business growing without relying on acquisitions or AI-relabeling.
India's top IT services firms' FY28 fresher hiring guidance, released around FY27 year-end results. Further declines would show NIIT's core customer pipeline shrinking independent of its own execution.
NIIT's AI-enabled revenue percentage reported consistently across Q2 and Q3 FY27 earnings calls. Stable reporting would support the AI-growth narrative; continued wide swings would undercut it.

Questions people ask
Is NIIT Limited profitable in 2026?
Yes but thinly. NIIT Limited posted FY2026 (ended March 31, 2026) consolidated revenue of INR 3,902 million with PAT of INR 53 million, but EBITDA was negative INR 40 million. Q1 FY27 (June 2026) showed PAT of INR 81 million on EBITDA of negative INR 14 million, still below breakeven at the operating level.
Could AI replace NIIT's core training business?
NIIT's core product is standardized tech curriculum delivery, which is directly exposed to substitution by free or low cost LLM tutors and coding assistants. Its own flagship programs, like the November 2025 'Building Agentic AI Systems' course, teach students to use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and LangChain, positioning NIIT as a thin layer atop the very models that could replace it.
Who is NIIT Limited's biggest competitor?
NIIT competes with UpGrad, Simplilearn, Great Learning, Emeritus, Coursera, and Udemy in enterprise and consumer skills training. As of June 2025 reporting, these rivals are also pivoting into B2B enterprise revenue amid weak consumer edtech demand, directly contesting NIIT's core segment with more capital.
Is NIIT Limited's revenue growth real or acquisition driven?
Largely acquisition and AI relabeling driven. Q1 FY26 organic (non-acquisition) revenue was down about 4% year over year per a July 22, 2026 analyst narrative, even as headline growth of 9 to 14% was reported, propped up by the iamneo and IFBI acquisitions rather than underlying demand.
Who owns NIIT Limited?
NIIT Limited is a publicly listed founder led company on BSE (500304) and NSE (NIITLTD), led by Chairman Rajendra S. Pawar, Vice Chairman and MD Vijay K. Thadani, and CEO Pankaj Jathar. It is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, India, and has no reported new controlling shareholder or PE buyout.
What is NIIT's AI revenue percentage and can it be trusted?
Figures are inconsistent. A July 21, 2026 wire report cited AI labeled programs at about 9% of Q1 FY27 revenue, while a Q3 FY26 earnings call cited AI enabled revenue at 17.65%, an unreconciled swing that raises questions about how consistently NIIT defines and measures its AI revenue metric.
