Nine Fives
Maker of driverless, networked RF test attenuators and switches for aerospace, drone, and phone testing.
Nine Fives has real hardware and RF pedigree but no disclosed customers, so its UX wedge remains open for bigger vendors to copy.
Nine Fives makes remote-controlled radio frequency switches and attenuators (hardware parts that test wireless systems) and has built software to control them over the internet instead of old-fashioned cables. The risk is that established players like Keysight and Rohde & Schwarz can copy the same remote-control idea relatively easily, and they already have deep customer relationships and huge R&D budgets. The one thing that could lock customers in is if Nine Fives becomes so central to how test engineers run their work routines that switching to someone else becomes painful, but that has not happened yet and the company has not announced any real customers to prove it.
Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, or Mini-Circuits ships a driverless REST/PoE-native instrument line. Would show incumbents closed the UX gap and collapsed Nine Fives' wedge.
Nine Fives closes a priced seed or Series A round by early 2027. Would show investor confidence and capital for hardware scale-up.
- Shipped attenuator and switch hardware shown at IMS 2026
- Hiring founding RF engineers at $170K to $200K plus equity
- 18 GHz product versions planned for later in 2026
- No named customers, design partners, or repeat orders disclosed as of July 2026.
- Architecture wedge (Web UI, PoE, REST API) is not protected and copyable by incumbents like Keysight or R&S.
- Only $500K raised to date, thin capital for hardware scaling and manufacturing.
- Marketed AI test automation feature is a thin, easily replicated layer over frontier LLMs, not a durable moat.
- Fast followers Mini-Circuits, Vaunix, JFW already sell comparable programmable/networked RF instruments.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Keysight Technologies | losing to | Market leader across spectrum/network analyzers and power meters as of June 30, 2026 report; Nine Fives has no named customers yet |
| Rohde and Schwarz | losing to | Reinvests 15-20% of revenue in R&D per Oct 12, 2025 EE Times report, dwarfing Nine Fives $500K total raised |
| Mini-Circuits | contesting | Already ships programmable networked attenuators and switches, undercutting Nine Fives UX wedge as of July 2026 |
| Vaunix | contesting | Sells programmable USB RF digital step attenuators up to 40 GHz, a direct fast follower to Nine Fives products |
| JFW Industries | contesting | Ships programmable/networked attenuators and RF switches already, per April 13, 2026 market report |
- Is Nine Fives profitable?
- No. Nine Fives is a pre revenue startup as of July 2026, with CB Insights listing revenue as 0 for the fiscal year on record. The company closed a $500K convertible note on April 1, 2026, and has no disclosed customer or sales figures yet.
- Who owns Nine Fives?
- Nine Fives is privately held, founded in 2025 by CEO Noah Levy and COO Andrew Kurtz, both former SpaceX RF and aerospace hardware engineers. It is backed by Y Combinator (P26 batch) and Space Capital, a space focused VC fund, with a $500K convertible note closed April 1, 2026.
- Could AI replace Nine Fives' product?
- Not the hardware. Nine Fives sells physical calibrated RF attenuators and switches requiring manufacturing and RF engineering competency. Its marketed LLM feature, which turns rack configs into Python test scripts, is a thin wrapper any customer could replicate with Claude or GPT and SCPI or REST access.
- Who is Nine Fives' biggest competitor?
- Keysight Technologies is the market leader in RF test equipment, alongside Rohde & Schwarz, which reinvests 15 to 20 percent of revenue in R&D per an October 2025 EE Times report. Fast followers Mini Circuits, Vaunix, and JFW Industries already sell programmable networked attenuators and switches.
- Does Nine Fives have any named customers?
- No customer names, logos, or unit and revenue traction have been independently reported as of July 15, 2026. The company demonstrated shipping hardware, the POE ATTEN 6G and POE SWITCH 6G, at IMS 2026 but has not disclosed design partners or purchase orders.
