The call

Nova Labs still runs a real network with real carrier deals, but four years without a new funding round and a collapsed token leave its next move unclear.

Nova Labs built a system where people set up Wi-Fi hotspots that help phone networks handle more data traffic, and they paid users with Helium tokens to do it. The problem is that this only worked because the token was worth a lot of money; now that it is worth almost nothing, there is no real reason for someone to set up a hotspot instead of just letting AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon build their own version of the same thing. Those big phone companies are already working with Nova Labs but could replace it entirely since they own the customers and have the money to build the network themselves. The one thing that would show whether Nova Labs can survive is whether it can raise new funding at a good price; if it cannot find investors willing to put in real money, or if a big phone company buys it cheaply, that means the idea did not work as a standalone business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the direct threat here; carriers optimizing their own networks with AI could shrink the case for outside offload help. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Telefonica/Movistar. These carriers are Nova Labs's partners today but control the customers and could build in-house offload tech themselves. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 140,000 deployed hotspots and live carrier contracts give it a head start carriers would have to spend time and money to replicate.
What would change this call
Whether AT&T or T-Mobile announces an in-house Wi-Fi offload system instead of renewing with Nova Labs. Would show carriers no longer need Nova Labs' hotspot network.
Nova Labs' next equity funding round, priced above or below the March 2022 $1.2B valuation. Up-round would validate the pivot; down-round or sale at/below $1.2B would show it failed.
Whether Noble Mobile keeps or drops the Helium Mobile brand, pricing, and subscriber base after its June 2026 acquisition. Would show whether Nova Labs' consumer mobile business survives intact or is being absorbed away.

Questions people ask
Is Nova Labs (Helium) profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist. A third party estimated 2024 revenue at about $23.5 million, unverified by the company, while Nova Labs has raised no new funding since its $200M Series D in March 2022 at a $1.2B valuation, as of July 2026.
Who owns Nova Labs, the company behind Helium?
Nova Labs is privately held and venture backed, last valued at $1.2B after a $200M Series D in March 2022 co led by Tiger Global and Andreessen Horowitz. No new equity round has been publicly reported since, as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Nova Labs' Helium network?
Unlikely to replace it directly since Helium's value is 140,000+ physical Wi-Fi hotspots deployed as of June 2026, but AI driven offload orchestration built by carriers like AT&T could commoditize Helium's software QoS layer over time.
Who is Nova Labs' biggest competitor?
Nova Labs' partners AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Telefonica/Movistar are also its biggest structural threat since they could build in-house Wi-Fi offload alternatives; direct DeWi rivals include World Mobile Chain, Roam Networks and Wayru as of 2026.
Did Nova Labs face SEC legal trouble?
Yes. The SEC filed a complaint against Nova Labs on January 17, 2025 over unregistered securities sales and misrepresented partnerships with Lime, Nestle and Salesforce. Unregistered securities claims were dismissed and Nova Labs settled for a $200,000 fine on April 23, 2025.
What happened to the HNT token and does it still fund Helium hotspot operators?
HNT traded around $0.20 to $0.21 with a $37 to $39 million market cap as of July 20, 2026, down more than 99% from its November 2021 high near $48 to $55, weakening the token incentive that built Helium's hotspot network.
