The call

Novatek's legacy driver-chip business is shrinking as panel makers and Chinese rivals close in, while its automotive and edge-AI chip pivot is real but still unproven at scale.

Novatek designs the chips that control screens for phones, TVs, and cars, earning about US$9 to 10 billion in market value after 30 years of work. It is getting harder for them to keep customers because Samsung and other panel makers are now designing and making their own display chips instead of buying from Novatek, and cheaper Chinese competitors like NexChip are winning orders on price alone. The company is trying to shift into building faster AI and automotive chips, but this new business is still small and untested, so whether Novatek can move fast enough before the old business shrinks too far is the one thing that will decide if the company stays strong or fades.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI model replaces driver-IC design; Novatek's own edge-AI SoC line is a growth bet, not something eating it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Samsung Display and BOE insourcing driver ICs; NexChip and GalaxyCore undercutting on price. Panel giants now design their own driver chips and Chinese rivals already lead cheaper LCD segments, squeezing Novatek's core business today. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep design-in relationships with panel makers and automotive certification that's slow and costly for customers to redo.
What would change this call
Novatek's Q2 2026 revenue (due ~Aug 2026) either hits the guided 19-23% QoQ jump or falls short. Shows whether the rebound is real demand or a one-off pull-in order effect.
Samsung Display's Gen 8.6 OLED fab ramps output through 2026. Would show in-house driver-IC capacity displacing Novatek's merchant OLED business.
A named Tier-1 automotive or edge-AI customer confirms use of Novatek's Arm Neoverse CSS N2 chiplet. Would show the SoC diversification is gaining real commercial traction, not just first silicon.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue NT$100.7B, down 2.1% YoY (2026-04-17)
  • Q1 2026 revenue NT$23.15B, down 14.7% YoY (2026-05-07)
  • SoC and machine-vision chips were 44% of Q1 2026 revenue (2026-05-07)
Named risks
  • Merchant DDIC market shrinking as Samsung Display and BOE insource driver-IC design. Severity: high
  • Chinese rivals NexChip and GalaxyCore compressing legacy LCD driver-IC margins. Severity: medium
  • Q2 2026 revenue jump may be one-off 'pull-in orders' tied to a DRAM price surge, not durable demand. Severity: medium
  • SoC/automotive/edge-AI diversification still unproven commercially beyond first silicon (Sept 2025). Severity: medium
  • Management flagged Middle East conflict as a macro risk to end-market demand (May 2026). Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Novatek Microelectronics profitable in 2026?
Yes but shrinking. Novatek posted Q1 2026 net income of NT$3.77 billion, down 28.4% year over year, after FY2025 net income of NT$16.35 billion, down 19.6% year over year, per its 2026-04-17 and 2026-05-07 earnings reports.
Who is Novatek Microelectronics's biggest competitor?
Samsung Display and BOE are the biggest structural threats, as both are vertically integrating driver-IC design in-house per a 2026-01-11 industry report, while NexChip led small/medium LCD driver IC share as of Q3 2024 on price.
Could AI replace Novatek Microelectronics?
Unlikely soon. Novatek's display-driver chip design requires multi-year qualification cycles with panel makers that AI tools don't remove; it also supplies machine-vision SoCs for edge-AI cameras, with first silicon on an Arm Neoverse chiplet SoC completed 2025-09-24.
Is Novatek Microelectronics losing market share to Chinese rivals?
Yes in commodity segments. NexChip held the largest small/medium-panel LCD driver IC share as of Q3 2024, and GalaxyCore also competes on price, pressuring Novatek's legacy LCD driver-IC business.
Who owns Novatek Microelectronics?
Novatek is an independent public company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (ticker 3034), with no parent. It was spun out of UMC's Commercial Product Division in 1997 and had a market cap of roughly NT$306 billion (about US$9 to 10 billion) as of 2026-07-24.
Is Novatek Microelectronics laying off employees?
No layoff announcements were found. Headcount trackers disagree widely, from about 1,462 employees per Crustdata (2026-06-21) to 3,046 per WSJ (2025-07-08), suggesting data inconsistency rather than confirmed cuts.
