The call

OakNorth is profitable and growing fast, but its US loan book, 40% of originations from a market entered in 2023, has never been tested by a real downturn.

OakNorth is a regulated bank in the UK that lends money to medium-sized companies and has made strong profits while keeping loan losses extremely low. It is hard to copy because it has a decade of data about borrowers that AI and big banks do not have, plus it needs government approval to operate (a banking license). The big test ahead is whether its loan quality stays strong if the US economy enters a recession, since OakNorth recently started lending there and has not yet seen how its borrowers perform in a downturn.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude cut OakNorth's cost-to-income ratio to 26% rather than threatening its lending book. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No UK Tier-1 bank has shipped a competing lower-mid-market lending product matching OakNorth's underwriting approach. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A full PRA/FCA bank license plus a decade of proprietary borrower data that big banks and AI models don't have for this segment.

Unlikely. OakNorth holds a PRA/FCA banking license and a decade of proprietary borrower data (0.045% cumulative loss rate on £15.1bn lent), and uses AI internally, cutting cost-to-income to 26% by May 2026, rather than being displaced by it.
