The call

A century-old licensed bank and insurer where the real risks are margin compression and a new CEO's choices, not AI or tech rivals.

OCBC Bank takes deposits from customers and lends money to businesses and individuals across 19 countries, earning fees and interest along the way. It is very hard to replace because it has a government banking license that took decades to build, a network of physical branches, deposit insurance that customers trust, and an insurance company it owns. The main thing to watch is whether OCBC can keep making money from interest as interest rates change, and whether its new leader will steer the bank differently after taking over in early 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. OCBC uses AI internally to cut costs and automate service, not a rival product that can take its licensed business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No digital-only entrant or big tech rival can hold a MAS bank license or match OCBC's deposit base and 19-market network. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. MAS banking license, deposit insurance status, and a 19-market branch and agent network no app-only rival can copy.
What would change this call
1Q26 NIM stays below 1.76% or falls further in subsequent quarters. Would show margin pressure is structural, not one-off, weakening core lending profitability.
CEO Tan Teck Long announces strategy shift or cost-cutting program in 2026. Would confirm new leadership is repositioning the bank, signaling prior strategy was insufficient.
OCBC's 600 planned RM hires materialize versus further net headcount decline. Would show whether AI-driven automation is net job-reducing or reallocating within the bank.

Questions people ask
Is OCBC Bank profitable in 2026?
Yes. OCBC posted FY2025 net profit of S$7.42 billion (down 2% YoY due to BEPS Pillar Two tax rules) on record profit before tax of S$9.12 billion, as of 31 Dec 2025. In 1Q2026, total income rose 5% YoY to S$3.8 billion.
Could AI replace OCBC Bank?
No. OCBC holds a MAS banking license, deposit-insurance status, and a 19-market branch network that AI cannot replicate. It deploys AI internally (OCBC GPT, agentic KYC, AI-avatar wealth app launched July 2026) as a productivity tool, not a substitute for its licensed banking function.
Who is OCBC Bank's biggest competitor?
DBS Group Holdings, Singapore's largest bank, is OCBC's closest rival, reporting record 1Q26 net profit of S$2.93 billion. UOB and digital-only entrants like GXS Bank and Trust Bank also compete for Singapore retail banking share as of mid-2026.
Who owns OCBC Bank?
OCBC is publicly listed on SGX (ticker O39). The Lee Kong Chian founding family has been its largest shareholder for nearly a century, holding roughly 28%. OCBC itself owns 93.72% of insurer Great Eastern Holdings as of October 2024.
What happened to OCBC's bid to take Great Eastern Holdings private?
OCBC's S$1.4 billion privatisation offer for Great Eastern, which raised its stake to 93.72% by October 2024, failed after an EGM vote in mid-2025. Great Eastern resumed trading on SGX on 21 August 2025, and new CEO Tan Teck Long said in February 2026 OCBC will not raise the stake further.
Who is OCBC Bank's CEO in 2026?
Tan Teck Long became OCBC Group CEO effective 1 January 2026, succeeding Helen Wong, who retired on 31 December 2025. Tan has since stated Great Eastern is a settled 'chapter' and OCBC will not pursue further stake increases, as of 24 February 2026.
