OceanBase
Distributed database born inside Alipay, now spun out to sell to banks and retailers.
OceanBase's grip on Chinese financial infrastructure looks solid, but its growth path runs through a crowded field of Alibaba's own products and an IPO that hasn't happened yet.
OceanBase is a database system (the software that stores and retrieves data for companies) built by Alibaba and currently used by Ant Group to handle enormous transaction volumes safely and without data loss. It is hard to replace within China because of strict government rules that keep foreign databases out and because OceanBase has spent 15+ years proving itself works during China's biggest shopping events, but it faces direct competition from TiDB and PolarDB-X, which are Chinese-made rivals that work similarly and are openly available to any customer. The big question is whether Alibaba will push its own PolarDB-X database instead, which would shrink OceanBase's growth opportunities, and whether OceanBase can prove its new AI tools attract paying customers outside of Ant Group's own use within the next year.
Alibaba Cloud consolidates behind one of PolarDB-X or OceanBase, or keeps marketing both. Shows whether OceanBase's domestic growth ceiling is being narrowed by its own parent ecosystem.
seekdb or LakeBase lands a named non-Ant external customer. Would show the new AI-database line has real traction beyond internal Ant Group use.
- 100% of Double 11 payment traffic since 2016
- RPO=0, RTO under 8 seconds
- Over 400 customers worldwide as of 2023
- No confirmed IPO or disclosed financials as of July 2026 despite 2024 restructuring signaling listing intent.
- Sibling Alibaba product PolarDB-X actively marketed against OceanBase domestically.
- seekdb and LakeBase AI-database line largely validated only via internal Ant Group use (AQ, Lingguang), unproven externally.
- Ownership records (CBInsights, PitchBook) still list Ant Group as sole owner, suggesting governance/financial opacity post-2024 spin-off.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| TiDB (PingCAP) | contesting | MySQL-compatible distributed SQL rival directly benchmarked against OceanBase, ongoing as of 2026-05 |
| Alibaba Cloud PolarDB-X | contesting | Sibling Alibaba-ecosystem database actively marketed in China as OceanBase alternative, n.d. |
| Oracle Database | gaining on | Displaced as Alipay's core transactional DB over 15+ years, cited as of 2026-05-07 |
| Oracle, AWS Aurora, Google Cloud Spanner | gaining on | Structurally barred from China financial-data workloads by data-sovereignty rules, per 2026 brief |
- Is OceanBase profitable in 2026?
- No disclosed revenue or profit figures exist for OceanBase as of July 2026. It remains privately held after a 2024 Ant Group spin-off, with no confirmed IPO filing despite China's 2026 STAR Market rule changes opening AI-firm listing paths.
- Who owns OceanBase?
- Ant Group spun off its sole ownership in July 2024 via a share-swap, bringing in 35 new shareholders including Alibaba affiliates Hangzhou Junhan and Hangzhou Junao, plus HongShan, Yunfeng Capital, and China Capital Investment Group, paving the way for a possible listing.
- Could AI replace OceanBase's database business?
- Unlikely soon: OceanBase runs Alipay's core transactional system with RPO=0/RTO under 8 seconds and has handled 100% of Double 11 payment traffic since 2016. It is instead building AI-native products like seekdb, launched open-source in November 2025.
- Who is OceanBase's biggest competitor?
- Domestically, TiDB (PingCAP) is a direct MySQL-compatible distributed SQL rival, and Alibaba Cloud's own PolarDB-X is actively marketed as an OceanBase alternative within the same Alibaba ecosystem, per comparisons as of 2026.
- Is OceanBase going to IPO soon?
- As of July 2026, no IPO filing has been confirmed. The July 2024 Ant Group shareholder restructuring explicitly 'paves the way' for a public listing, and 2026 STAR Market rule changes now allow AI/large-model firms to file, but OceanBase has not done so.
- What is seekdb and why does OceanBase make it?
- seekdb is OceanBase's AI-native database for vector search, RAG, and agent workloads, open-sourced under Apache 2.0 in November 2025, MySQL wire-protocol compatible, and integrated with LangChain, LlamaIndex, Dify, and Coze.
