The call

Offchain Labs still runs the biggest rollup by assets, but Coinbase's Base is pulling ahead on usage while Arbitrum's own token and valuation sit frozen since 2021.

Offchain Labs built Arbitrum, a second-layer blockchain that lets people trade and move money faster and cheaper than on the main Ethereum chain. Arbitrum was the biggest of these second-layer blockchains by money locked in, but Coinbase's competing Base layer has already started pulling customers away by giving them easier access through Coinbase's regular trading app, which is hard to fight. The real test over the next year is whether Offchain Labs can make money from companies that rent their own private blockchains (like Robinhood did) or from fees paid by traders, or if Coinbase keeps winning by simply being the easiest place for regular people to start.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI coding agents could speed up rival chain launches, but no AI product directly displaces rollup infrastructure today. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase (Base L2). Base uses Coinbase's retail app and wallet to funnel users straight onto its chain, pulling DeFi TVL share away from Arbitrum through 2025-26. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Largest existing TVL base, live enterprise chains like Robinhood Chain on its Orbit framework, and deep developer tooling like Stylus and Nitro.

  • ARB token down ~97% from 2024 peak (2026-07)
Named risks
  • Base's Coinbase-owned distribution continues eroding Arbitrum's DeFi TVL leadership. Severity: high
  • No new equity round since 2021 Series B leaves valuation stale after 5 years. Severity: medium
  • ARB token down ~97% from peak with monthly unlocks through March 2027 pressuring price. Severity: high
  • Robinhood Chain's early growth shows 26:1 volume-to-TVL ratio, suggesting speculative memecoin activity that could reverse. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Offchain Labs profitable in 2026?
No audited financials are public. Third-party estimators put Offchain Labs revenue at roughly $27-30M per year as of 2026 (Growjo ~$29.6M, ZoomInfo/Datanyze ~$27.3M), with no disclosed profitability figures, against a private valuation last set at $1.2B in August 2021.
Who owns Offchain Labs?
Offchain Labs is privately held and venture-backed, with no IPO or acquisition. Its last disclosed round was a $100-120M Series B in August 2021 led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with Coinbase Ventures, Polychain and Pantera among investors, valuing it at ~$1.2B post-money.
Is Arbitrum losing ground to Coinbase's Base?
Yes, in parts. As of May 2026, Base has overtaken Arbitrum on DeFi TVL share in stretches of 2025-2026, leveraging Coinbase's owned retail distribution, even though Arbitrum One still led overall L2 TVL at $12.2-18B versus Base's $6-10B in June 2026.
Could AI replace what Offchain Labs builds?
AI coding tools already assist developer tooling (Offchain Labs even ships an 'Arbitrum dApp Skill for Claude Code' as of February 2026), but core protocol work like Nitro's fraud proofs, BOLD, and the Timeboost auction mechanism requires cryptographic and game-theoretic design AI cannot replicate.
What is Robinhood Chain and why does it matter for Offchain Labs?
Robinhood Chain is an Orbit-based L2 built on Offchain Labs' tech that went live on public mainnet July 1, 2026. It hit $100M+ TVL within a week and roughly $210M plus 1 million active wallets within two weeks, testing whether enterprise Orbit chains can become repeatable revenue.
Who is Offchain Labs' biggest competitor?
Coinbase's Base, built on the OP Stack, is the most direct threat, having overtaken Arbitrum on DeFi TVL share in parts of 2025-2026 via Coinbase's retail distribution. Optimism/OP Labs and its Superchain are also contesting share; together Base, Arbitrum and Optimism handle about 90% of L2 transaction volume as of 2026.
