The call

Olo's guest-data lock-in still works today, but Toast's bundling and AI ordering agents are both closing in on the same order-taking layer Olo depends on.

Olo is a software middleman that links restaurants to delivery apps, payment systems, and customer loyalty programs. It built its position over 20 years by collecting data on 108 million customers and plugging into over 400 different cash register systems, making it hard for restaurants to leave. But that advantage is shrinking fast. Toast, a competitor that processes payments for many U.S. restaurants, is now offering its own ordering and loyalty tools baked straight into its system, so restaurants do not need Olo anymore. At the same time, AI voice systems and chatbots are starting to take orders directly, cutting out the need for Olo's software altogether. Olo's plan to fight back is a new app launching sometime in 2026, but nobody knows if it will work.

Why
01
AI pressure: Voice-AI drive-thru and LLM ordering agents (plus DoorDash/Uber Eats AI features). AI voice and chat agents can take the order directly, cutting Olo out of the exact task it was built to own. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Toast and PAR Technology. Toast now bundles ordering and loyalty into the POS it already runs for 16% of U.S. restaurant card volume, undercutting Olo's need to exist. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 400+ POS integrations, 108 million guest profiles, and switching costs that make ripping Olo out expensive and slow.
What would change this call
Olo App ships and reports agent/consumer order volume in 2026. Shows whether Olo can defend order-taking against AI/voice agents.
Olo enterprise NRR reported below 110% in a future quarter. Would signal Toast/PAR bundling is pulling large accounts away.
Another top-20 Olo brand builds or switches to an in-house/Toast-based ordering stack. Would confirm Wingstop-style defection is a repeatable pattern, not a one-off.

Questions people ask
Is Olo still a public company?
No. Olo delisted from the NYSE after Thoma Bravo completed its acquisition on September 12, 2025, paying $10.25 per share cash for a roughly $2.0 billion deal. Olo now operates as a private, wholly-owned Thoma Bravo portfolio company with no public quarterly financial disclosures.
Is Olo profitable?
Mixed signals. FY2024 revenue was $284.9 million, up 24.8% YoY, but EBITDA was -$4.7 million and net loss was $897K. Olo laid off 9% of staff in September 2024 despite reported profitability that quarter. Since going private in September 2025, no financials have been disclosed.
Is Olo laying off employees?
Yes, repeatedly. Olo cut 11% of staff (81 people) in June 2023, 9% in September 2024, and an additional undisclosed round right after Thoma Bravo's acquisition closed in September 2025. Headcount fell from 783 in 2023 to an estimated 538 by December 2025 per Revelio Labs.
Could AI replace Olo's ordering platform?
Partially exposed. Voice-AI drive-thru systems and LLM-based ordering agents threaten Olo's core order-taking function, per industry analysis dated 2026-06-18. Olo's defense is its 400+ POS integrations and 108M+ guest profiles, plus a planned 'Olo App' for agent-initiated orders slated for later in 2026, still unproven.
Who is Olo's biggest competitor?
Toast, a cloud POS/payments incumbent that processed roughly 16% of all U.S. restaurant card volume in 2024 and bundles ordering directly into its stack. PAR Technology (Punchh loyalty) also competes directly on ordering and engagement modules as of 2025.
Did Olo lose a major customer like Wingstop?
Yes. Wingstop dropped Olo's U.S. domestic ordering platform in 2023 to build a $50 million proprietary in-house stack, per QSR Magazine, though it retained Olo for international ordering and voice technology, a notable enterprise churn precedent.
