The call

Omdia has real proprietary data but its research segment is shrinking while AI tools and Gartner both close in on the same buyers.

Omdia sells market reports and research advice to businesses, relying on data from conversations with tech vendors and surveys of customers. The problem is twofold: Gartner is a much larger competitor that already owns most customers' trust, and AI tools can now do what Omdia does, summarize markets and compare vendors, faster and cheaper. Omdia's own parent company admitted AI is hurting sales, and the research division shrank 3.9 percent in early 2026 while the rest of the business grew. The deciding factor will be whether that decline speeds up or stops in the next two quarters; if it worsens, the parent company may sell or shut down Omdia rather than keep investing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI answer engines and AI-native research tools (AlphaSense, Brain.ai). Gen AI automates market sizing and desk research, Omdia's core product, and parent already flagged this as a live headwind. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Gartner. Gartner's 2,000+ analysts and dominant shortlist status pull budget from Omdia's niches with no wall keeping it out. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Decades of proprietary vendor briefings and enterprise survey data that generic AI models can't easily replicate.
What would change this call
Informa TechTarget's Q2/Q3 2026 earnings report on Intelligence & Advisory segment growth or decline. Shows whether Omdia's proprietary-data moat is stabilizing or being overrun by AI substitutes.
Any further goodwill impairment disclosure on Omdia/I&A segment in 2026 filings. Would indicate deeper balance-sheet stress and eroding confidence in the merged research brand.
A strategic-review or divestiture announcement for the I&A segment by Informa TechTarget. Would signal parent company is treating Omdia as underperforming and considering restructuring.

Questions people ask
Is Omdia profitable in 2026?
Omdia has no standalone P&L; it sits in Informa TechTarget's Intelligence & Advisory segment, which fell 3.9% YoY in Q1 2026 even as the parent posted a $70.8M GAAP net loss and a $45M goodwill impairment, per the May 7, 2026 results.
Who owns Omdia?
Omdia is a brand within Informa TechTarget (Nasdaq: TTGT). Informa PLC held a 57% stake versus 43% for legacy TechTarget shareholders after the January 2024 merger that combined Informa Tech's digital assets with TechTarget, Inc.
Could AI replace Omdia's analysts?
Management itself flagged AI risk: Informa TechTarget's Q1 2026 earnings cited search traffic shifting to AI answer engines as a headwind, and the Omdia-housing Intelligence & Advisory segment declined 3.9% YoY partly on lower consulting volumes, as of May 7, 2026.
Is Omdia laying off staff?
No confirmed 2026 layoffs are documented; LinkedIn listed 575 employees as of March 2026, and parent Informa TechTarget ran a cost-cutting 'Combination Plan' targeting about $45M in savings after its January 2024 merger.
Who is Omdia's biggest competitor?
Gartner, an estimated $4.2 to $6.3 billion revenue firm with over 2,000 analysts (company-claimed industry estimate, 2026-06-29), dwarfs Omdia; analysts describe Omdia, ISG, Everest Group and Canalys as niche players chipping at Gartner's edges rather than competing head on.
What is Omdia's revenue?
Omdia has no disclosed standalone revenue. At the 2024 merger announcement, Informa Tech's digital businesses including Omdia were estimated at about $275M 2024 revenue; the parent Informa TechTarget posted $486.8M total GAAP revenue for full-year 2025.
