The call

One Identity holds its ground in legacy hybrid-AD accounts while Microsoft's bundled governance tools climb toward the same regulated enterprises it depends on, all mid-spinoff.

One Identity makes software that controls who gets access to sensitive company systems and data, mostly for big Fortune 100 companies that are locked into using it because it handles complex rules and workflows they depend on. Microsoft is now building similar features directly into its own products like Entra ID and Azure, which it sells as part of Microsoft 365, giving it a huge advantage because it can offer the same thing to the same customers without them paying extra or switching vendors. The biggest question is whether One Identity can keep customers by doing things Microsoft cannot do, or whether Microsoft's bundled approach will pull away too many of its core clients over the next two years.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Entra ID Governance. Microsoft bundles AI-driven access governance into M365/Azure licenses customers already pay for, squeezing the case for standalone tools. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Entra ID Governance). Entra ID Governance ships directly into the Fortune 100 accounts One Identity depends on, backed by the Azure sales machine. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep entrenchment in hybrid Active Directory and regulated, heterogeneous environments Microsoft's cloud-native tools don't fully cover yet.
What would change this call
Microsoft Entra ID Governance adds hybrid/on-prem Active Directory support within regulated enterprise deployments. Would show Microsoft encroaching directly on One Identity's core hybrid-AD moat.
One Identity's post-spinoff revenue growth rate reported after separation from Quest completes. Would show whether independence unlocked real growth or just leveraged-PE drift.
Security Guardian Active Directory extension ships or misses its promised Q1 2026 date. Would show execution capability during spinoff chaos versus delay.

Questions people ask
Is One Identity profitable in 2026?
No official profit figures exist since it is a private, PE-owned company. Parent Quest Software took on a $350 million debt refinancing in May 2025 to fund AI development, term loans maturing February 2029, suggesting reliance on leverage rather than disclosed organic profit.
Is One Identity laying off employees?
No layoffs are reported. A news report noted 623 employees at the time of the September 24, 2025 CEO transition, and the company announced a new Cork, Ireland global HQ in June 2026, citing over 80% of engineering already based in Europe, signaling expansion not cuts.
Could AI replace One Identity's software?
Unlikely soon. Its privileged-session controls, hybrid Active Directory/Entra integrations, and regulated-enterprise governance workflows resist pure AI replacement. The company itself shipped a GenAI-powered Security Guardian feature at Microsoft Ignite in November 2025 to strengthen, not eliminate, its own product.
Who is One Identity's biggest competitor?
Microsoft, via Entra ID Governance bundled directly into Microsoft 365 and Azure, is the named structural threat. It shipped competing identity governance features from November 2025 through April 2026 straight into the same Fortune 100 accounts One Identity depends on.
Who owns One Identity?
Clearlake Capital Group, which acquired parent Quest Software (including One Identity and OneLogin) from Francisco Partners for roughly $5.4 billion including debt, closing February 2, 2022. In June 2026 One Identity announced plans to become an independent company still under Clearlake.
Will One Identity go public?
No IPO has been announced. As of the June 23, 2026 independence announcement, One Identity remains owned by Clearlake Capital with a new Cork, Ireland headquarters and no disclosed public-listing timeline.
