The call

OpenRice still owns Hong Kong's dining data and merchant relationships, but AI search tools and Meituan's delivery dominance are both circling the same discovery layer it built.

OpenRice helps Hong Kong residents find restaurants, read reviews, and make reservations, and it also sells tools to restaurant owners like payment systems and booking software. The company built up a real advantage over 26 years by collecting detailed information about local restaurants and getting millions of people to use it, plus tying restaurant owners into its software. But this lead is cracking because Meituan, which already dominates food delivery in Hong Kong through its Keeta app, can bundle restaurant discovery into that app and use its huge resources to compete. Google Maps and ByteDance's social apps are also stealing the customer discovery piece by using AI to recommend restaurants, which is what OpenRice's customers come for in the first place. The one thing that could change this is if OpenRice manages to become so valuable to restaurant owners through its payment and booking tools that they stick around even if customers leave for other apps, but that appears unlikely given how many alternatives exist.

Why
01
AI pressure: ByteDance TanRice and Google Maps AI (Gemini-powered dining search). AI tools that answer 'where should I eat' directly could skip OpenRice's review pages entirely. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meituan (via Keeta). Keeta already runs roughly half of HK's food delivery and could fold restaurant discovery into that same app. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 26 years of Hong Kong specific reviews plus booking and POS tools already wired into thousands of local restaurants.
What would change this call
Keeta launches a native HK restaurant discovery or booking feature inside its delivery app within 12 months. Would show Meituan converting delivery dominance into direct discovery-layer competition.
Google Maps rolls out AI-generated dining recommendations or reviews specifically for Hong Kong. Would show a bigger rival encroaching on OpenRice's core search and review function.
Xiaohongshu introduces paid restaurant listings or merchant ad tools for Hong Kong F&B businesses. Would show OpenRice's ad revenue base being contested among younger HK diners.

  • Revenue and valuation figures are unconfirmed and conflict by an order of magnitude across sources. Severity: medium
  • Delivery-market upheaval (Keeta dominance, Deliveroo exit) could divert F&B ad and partnership spend. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is OpenRice profitable in 2026?
No audited figures exist. Revenue estimates from data aggregators range wildly from about $11M to $220M as of 2026, an order-of-magnitude spread with no primary financial disclosure, so profitability cannot be confirmed either way.
Who owns OpenRice?
OpenRice was acquired in 2007 by JDB Holdings Limited, which remains its listed owner per Wikipedia's infobox as of 2026-07-25. No subsequent ownership change, IPO, or new acquirer has been reported since then.
Could AI replace OpenRice's core product?
OpenRice's review search and recommendation layer is directly exposed: it already runs an AI discovery engine built with BytePlus (ByteDance) that the vendor claims powers 60% of platform traffic, while Google Maps AI and ByteDance's own TanRice tool compete in the same niche.
Is Meituan a threat to OpenRice?
Yes. Meituan's Keeta became Hong Kong's food-delivery leader with about 53% share in 2025, overtaking foodpanda in 29 months after Deliveroo exited HK in April 2025, giving it distribution scale to bundle discovery features against OpenRice.
How many users does OpenRice have?
OpenRice claims 7.5 million active users across Asia-Pacific and 500,000 listed restaurants (vendor-claimed, undated), plus over 4 million registered users and 12,000 restaurants specifically in its Hong Kong merchant network.
Is OpenRice a safe company to join in 2026?
OpenRice is a stable, 27-year-old private Hong Kong incumbent with roughly 100-300 employees per staffing databases, but its consumer discovery business faces active AI and mainland-platform competition, making the role's long-term strategic footing uncertain despite short-term stability.
