The call

OpenSea still leads a shrunk NFT market while betting its future on a token swap business and a token launch that has not shipped.

OpenSea is a marketplace where people buy and sell NFTs and crypto tokens. It owns about 71% of NFT trading on Ethereum, but the NFT market shrank about 99% from its peak and keeps shrinking. OpenSea tried to compete in token swaps (where people exchange one cryptocurrency for another) with a product called OS2, but it is up against much bigger companies like Uniswap, Coinbase, and Binance that have more money and more users. The company laid off most of its workers and cut revenue by 94%, and it was supposed to launch its own token called SEA to keep users interested, but that got delayed indefinitely in March 2026, which is a major problem because that token was supposed to be their only real way to lock customers in. If that token never launches or if competitors like Blur and Magic Eden keep stealing their market share, OpenSea will look like it is just another copyable platform instead of something special.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-driven DeFi aggregators and portfolio/discovery tools. AI aggregators can automate token swap routing and discovery, the exact function OpenSea's new OS2 swap product depends on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Uniswap, Coinbase, and Binance. OpenSea's OS2 pivot into token swaps puts it up against three players who already run that business at scale. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Its brand and liquidity still lead Ethereum NFT trading, and Seaport code is embedded across other platforms.
What would change this call
OpenSea's SEA token remains unlaunched past Q4 2026. Shows the main retention/incentive tool for users is gone, weakening lock-in.
Monthly Ethereum NFT market share reports show OpenSea falling below 60%. Would show Blur or Magic Eden clawing back share OpenSea just regained.
OS2 token-swap volume stalls or declines versus Uniswap and Coinbase volumes. Would confirm the swap pivot is not gaining ground against established players.

Questions people ask
Is OpenSea profitable in 2026?
No indication of profitability. OpenSea's fee revenue collapsed roughly 94%, from about $571M in 2022 to roughly $33M in 2024, per a June 2026 review, driven by the broader NFT market crash and shrinking transaction volume.
Has OpenSea had layoffs?
Yes. OpenSea cut headcount from around 750 employees at its 2022 peak through a 20% layoff in July 2022 and a roughly 50% cut in November 2023, reaching approximately 110 staff by 2026, an 85% overall decline.
Did OpenSea's SEA token ever launch?
No. CEO Devin Finzer indefinitely postponed the SEA token generation event, originally slated for Q1 2026, on March 16, 2026, citing 'challenging crypto market conditions,' removing the platform's main planned retention incentive.
Who is OpenSea's biggest competitor?
Blur and Magic Eden are OpenSea's closest NFT marketplace rivals; Blur previously overtook OpenSea on share in 2023 to 2024 via fee cuts and token incentives. OpenSea's 2025 pivot into token swaps also puts it up against Uniswap, Coinbase, and Binance.
Is OpenSea still worth $13.3 billion?
That figure is stale. OpenSea's last disclosed valuation was $13.3B from a $300M Series C in January 2022; no new equity round has been reported since, despite the business shrinking sharply in revenue and headcount through 2026.
Could AI replace OpenSea's marketplace functions?
AI-driven DeFi aggregators can commoditize the swap-routing and portfolio-tracking features central to OpenSea's OS2 pivot (launched February 2025). Its harder-to-replace assets are its Seaport smart-contract infrastructure and accumulated liquidity network.
