The call

OpenX survives on Google's antitrust exposure while bigger independents and AI curation tools close in on its shrinking lane.

OpenX helps publishers sell their ad space to advertisers, competing in a protected corner of the market where Google faces legal restrictions. However, OpenX ranks fourth or fifth among independent players like Magnite and PubMatic, which are larger and more widely used by big advertisers. Its newer AI tool (OpenX IQ) is unproven, its leadership has turned over twice in six months, and bigger competitors are copying its specialty in selective ad placement, so it needs to prove that its AI actually works better than rivals within the next half-year or risk losing its place in buyer contracts.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Ad Manager and Microsoft Advertising AI curation tools. Both are building AI-driven curation that could copy OpenX's OpenXSelect pitch before OpenX IQ proves itself. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google. Google holds 76.4% DSP-spend coverage and is pushing into curation, squeezing OpenX's independent niche from the top. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Antitrust findings against Google keep publishers wanting an independent SSP option separate from Google's own ad stack.

Questions people ask
Is OpenX profitable in 2026?
OpenX does not disclose financials publicly. The company states (vendor-claimed) 14 consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth as of June 30, 2026, but no profit figures have been released, and no new funding has come in since November 2021.
Who is the CEO of OpenX right now?
As of June 30, 2026, OpenX has no permanent CEO. Matt Sattel departed after roughly five months in the role, and interim CEO Joshua Metzger took over while the company searches for a permanent replacement, following founder-era CEO John Gentry's death in January 2026.
Is OpenX suing Google?
Yes. OpenX filed a federal antitrust suit against Google on August 4, 2025 in EDVA, alleging rigged ad auctions. The case was transferred to SDNY on December 18, 2025 and consolidated into MDL No. 3010, with an amended complaint filed February 23, 2026.
Could AI replace OpenX's business?
AI threatens OpenX's curation and bid-optimization layer specifically, the area Google Ad Manager and Microsoft Advertising are expanding into. OpenX launched its own AI suite, OpenX IQ, on June 23, 2026, but no independent performance data confirming it beats rivals exists yet.
Who is OpenX's biggest competitor?
Per Jounce Media's February 2025 report, Magnite leads with 95.7% DSP-spend coverage and PubMatic has 86.0%, both ahead of OpenX's 75.0%. Google itself, at 76.4% coverage, is also a structural rival despite being the target of OpenX's antitrust suit.
Who owns OpenX?
OpenX Technologies, Inc. is privately held and venture-backed, with no acquisition or new equity round reported since a November 1, 2021 later-stage VC round. As of July 22, 2026, it remains an independent company, not part of a holding group.
