The call

Oshkosh Defense still runs on government contracts and old tooling advantages, but the AM General loss and tariff costs are eating into the numbers while it waits on a JLTV rebid.

Oshkosh Defense builds armored vehicles and trucks for the U.S. military and has deep roots in government contracting that are hard to replace because of security clearances and long-term supply relationships. The company lost its biggest contract (JLTV vehicles) to rival AM General in 2023, which created a $687 million hole in revenue, and now faces rising material costs from tariffs that jumped from $35 million to $200 million. The next 6 to 12 months will matter most: if Oshkosh wins back the Navy's JLTV business or its new autonomous weapons contract gains ground, the revenue gap shrinks and the company stabilizes; if it loses again and those bets fail, the pressure gets much worse.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anduril Industries autonomous ground systems. Anduril and similar autonomy shops are building unmanned ground platforms that could shrink demand for crewed trucks over time. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: AM General. AM General took the JLTV production contract away in 2023, leaving a roughly $687 million revenue hole as that work winds down. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. ITAR clearances, government-owned tooling, and multi-year sustainment work through 2031 make it hard for a new vendor to just walk in.

Questions people ask
Is Oshkosh Defense profitable in 2026?
Oshkosh Corp's Q1 2026 EPS missed estimates at $0.85 versus $1.04 expected on flat revenue of $2.32 billion (2026-03-31), after FY2025 revenue of $10.4 billion. The company remains profitable but faces margin pressure from tariffs and NGDV contract costs.
Did Oshkosh Defense lose the JLTV contract?
Yes. AM General won the JLTV A2 recompete on 2023-02-10 with a contract valued up to $8.66 billion, displacing Oshkosh as sole-source producer. Oshkosh protested but auditors rejected the protest on 2023-06-12.
Is Oshkosh Defense laying off workers?
In November 2025 Oshkosh Defense announced it would lay off 160 production workers at its Oshkosh, Wisconsin plant effective January 5, 2026, following a $52.8 million Q3 2025 sales decline in the segment.
Could AI replace Oshkosh Defense?
No, Oshkosh Defense is deploying AI itself rather than being displaced by it, fielding autonomous vehicles like ROGUE-Fires Block 2 ($92 million award, 2026-06-01) with partner Forterra to reduce crew requirements, not competing against outside AI firms.
Who owns Oshkosh Defense?
Oshkosh Defense is a wholly owned business segment of publicly traded Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK), which had a market cap of roughly $8.8 to 9.25 billion and traded near $155.01 as of 2026-07-24.
Who is Oshkosh Defense's biggest competitor?
AM General is Oshkosh Defense's primary rival, having taken the sole-source JLTV production role in 2023 with a contract worth up to $8.66 billion. Oshkosh is now bidding to reenter via a 2026-05-29 Navy RFI for up to 7,500 vehicles.
