OYO Rooms
Budget hotel booking app and franchise operator across India, US, and global markets.
OYO owns real hotel supply but not the doors customers walk through, and AI travel agents are being built with its rivals, not with OYO.
OYO Rooms operates budget hotels and motels, mostly in the United States and India, and has built a large network of franchise contracts plus ownership of Motel 6 and Studio 6. The hard part is that OYO does not control the websites where customers search and book rooms, Booking.com, Expedia, and MakeMyTrip own those discovery channels, and they are now partnering with Google's new artificial intelligence travel assistant that will show customers only a handful of hotel options instead of hundreds. The one thing that could change everything is whether Google's AI travel tool includes OYO when it launches in late 2026, because if major booking sites get the partnership but OYO does not, customers may simply stop finding OYO's rooms at all.
OYO's post-IPO FY27 quarterly profit reported without relying on deferred-tax credits. Shows whether profitability is real cash-based improvement or still accounting-driven.
Direct-app booking share versus OTA-referred bookings disclosed in post-IPO filings. Shows whether OYO is reducing dependence on MakeMyTrip/Booking/Expedia or losing more ground to them.
- 9M FY26 net profit ₹748 cr, ₹559 cr from non-cash tax credit
- 80-83% of revenue comes from outside India
- $525M cash paid for Motel 6/Studio 6 in 2024
- Over 80% revenue concentrated in mature US/Europe budget-motel market, exposed to demand shocks.
- Headline profit growth heavily reliant on non-cash deferred tax credit, not cash operations.
- AI-driven travel discovery consolidating around Booking and Expedia, excluding OYO from agentic partnerships.
- 75% of IPO proceeds earmarked for debt repayment, making deleveraging plan dependent on successful listing.
- History of two withdrawn IPO attempts (2021, 2023/2024) signals execution and market-timing risk.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| MakeMyTrip | losing to | Holds ~63% of India online hotel-booking share; penalized with OYO by CCI on 2022-10-28 for exclusivity delisting rivals |
| Booking Holdings and Expedia | losing to | Reportedly named Google's agentic travel AI partners for 2026 I/O expansion, excluding OYO (2026-05-19) |
| FabHotels, Treebo, Bloom Hotels | contesting | Direct India budget-hotel rivals with growing FY25 GTV/revenue figures reported March 2026 |
| Airbnb | losing to | Airbnb FY2025 revenue ~$12.2B and net income ~$2.51B dwarfs OYO's ~$750M FY25 revenue |
- Is OYO Rooms profitable in 2026?
- OYO's parent PRISM reported ₹748 crore net profit for April to December 2025, but ₹559 crore of that is a non-cash deferred tax credit. FY25 (ended March 2025) profit was ₹245 crore. Underlying cash profitability remains thin despite headline profit growth.
- Who owns OYO Rooms?
- OYO is privately held by parent entity Oravel Stays, renamed PRISM in September 2025. Founder Ritesh Agarwal holds a large stake via RA Hospitality Holdings and Redsprig Innovation Partners; other investors include SoftBank, Microsoft, Airbnb and Peak XV. An IPO was filed June 30, 2026.
- Could AI replace OYO Rooms?
- AI cannot run hotels, but AI-driven discovery is compressing traveler shortlists from about 40 hotels to 4 (NYU SPS and BCG, March 2026). Google's 2026 agentic travel partnerships reportedly favor Booking Holdings and Expedia, not OYO, threatening OYO's demand-side visibility rather than its physical operations.
- Who is OYO's biggest competitor?
- MakeMyTrip's Go platform holds roughly 63% of India's online hotel-booking intermediation and was penalized alongside OYO by India's CCI in 2022 for an exclusivity deal delisting rivals FabHotels and Treebo, showing MMT's outsized distribution power over OYO.
- Is OYO going public soon?
- OYO's parent PRISM filed an updated DRHP on June 30, 2026 for a ₹6,650 crore (about $800M) fresh-issue-only IPO, with SEBI clearance received June 5, 2026 and shareholder approval from December 20, 2025. Target listing is H2 2026, after two prior withdrawn IPO attempts in 2021 and 2023/2024.
- What happened with OYO's Motel 6 acquisition?
- OYO announced a $525 million all-cash acquisition of Motel 6 and Studio 6 (G6 Hospitality) from Blackstone Real Estate on September 20, 2024, closing December 17, 2024. It added about 1,500 US and Canada locations and roughly $1.7 billion in gross room revenue, pushing overseas revenue to 80 to 83% of OYO's total by late 2025.
