The call

Palantir's government lock-in still expands, but Salesforce's Army win shows the wall around that business now has a door in it.

Palantir sells data analysis software to the U.S. government and military, making over $4.5 billion a year. For years, the company had an edge because its systems were deeply woven into classified military networks and required expensive security clearances to replace. But Salesforce just won a $5.6 billion Army contract in January 2026 by offering similar capabilities, proving that Palantir's advantage is not as locked-in as it seemed. The company is making money and will likely survive at least 3 to 5 more years, but its international business barely grew in 2025, and the stock is expensive relative to its future earnings. The biggest test: whether Palantir can hold onto government contracts when they come up for renewal, or whether Salesforce and others start winning those deals too.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Foundation models like Claude and Nemotron plug into Palantir's platform rather than replace it, feeding its workflow layer. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Salesforce (Missionforce). Salesforce's Missionforce unit won a $5.6B Army contract in Jan 2026, breaking into defense work Palantir once had to itself. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Classified system integrations, IL5 clearances, and multi-year sole-source deals make ripping Palantir out of government workflows costly and slow.

Questions people ask
Is Palantir profitable in 2026?
Yes. Palantir reported FY2025 net income of roughly $1.13 to $1.63 billion on revenue of $4.48 to $4.628 billion, and Q1 2026 revenue hit $1.633 billion, up 84.7% year over year, reported May 4, 2026. The company also raised FY2026 revenue guidance to $7.65 to $7.662 billion.
Who is Palantir's biggest competitor?
Salesforce is the most notable new threat: its Missionforce defense unit won a $5.6 billion U.S. Army contract in January 2026, directly challenging Palantir's government stronghold. Snowflake and Databricks contest the commercial data platform side, while hyperscalers like Microsoft Azure and AWS build competing AI-agent stacks.
Could AI replace Palantir?
Unlikely soon. Palantir orchestrates frontier models like Anthropic Claude, xAI, and NVIDIA Nemotron (deployment engine launched June 29, 2026) atop its proprietary Ontology data layer and classified IL5 government integrations, which are hard for pure model providers to replicate without similar security clearances and contracts.
Who owns Palantir Technologies?
Palantir is publicly traded on Nasdaq under ticker PLTR since its September 30, 2020 direct listing. Institutional ownership is about 56.5%, insider ownership about 7.4% including co-founders Peter Thiel and CEO Alex Karp, with major holders like BlackRock and Vanguard, per stockanalysis.com.
Is Palantir stock overvalued in 2026?
Palantir trades at roughly 40 to 60 times forward sales as of July 2026, and the stock had fallen about 35% from its February 2026 all-time high of $207.52, per fool.com's July 2, 2026 analysis, despite strong revenue growth and raised guidance.
Is Palantir's government business at risk from competitors?
Salesforce's Missionforce unit won a $5.6 billion U.S. Army contract in January 2026, showing the government moat is contested, not absolute. Still, Palantir secured its own $10 billion, 10-year Army Enterprise Agreement in 2025 consolidating 75 prior contracts.
