The call

Panasonic is cutting jobs and shrinking battery share to CATL and BYD while it bets its next act on Tesla's rebound and unproven AI data-center batteries years away.

Panasonic makes batteries, appliances, and industrial equipment for companies worldwide. It is getting squeezed hard because Chinese rivals CATL and BYD are cheaper and better at making EV batteries, which is where Panasonic hoped to grow. The company just cut profits in half, laid off 12,000 workers, and is betting everything on Tesla buying more batteries starting in 2026 and on a new product for data centers that will not ship until 2028 or 2029. If Tesla's orders disappoint or if CATL and BYD keep taking share, Panasonic has few places left to turn.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as an ingredient in Panasonic's Blue Yonder supply-chain software, not as a company that replaces Panasonic. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: CATL and BYD. CATL holds roughly 39 to 45 percent of global EV battery installs and BYD 14 to 19 percent, while Panasonic sits outside the top 3 suppliers. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep manufacturing know-how and a long Tesla relationship, plus a new bet on AI data-center batteries starting around 2028.
What would change this call
Q1 FY2027 earnings (~August 2026) show whether Tesla-driven battery rebound and cost cuts materialize. Tests whether Panasonic's single-customer bet on Tesla is paying off.
4680 cell mass production timeline slips further past current targets. Would show Panasonic's next-gen battery pivot is still not competitive at scale.
Kansas gigafactory utilization moves toward or away from its 4,000-worker capacity. Indicates whether US EV demand and Tesla orders are actually recovering.
Key numbers
  • FY2026 net profit fell 46% to 189.5 billion yen (2026-05-12)
  • 12,000 jobs cut worldwide in FY2026 restructuring (2026-05-12)
  • Kansas plant runs at 1,800 of 4,000 planned workers (2026-06-17)
Named risks
  • Battery segment recovery entirely dependent on single customer Tesla's demand rebound. Severity: high
  • 4680 cell mass production delays and slow Kansas plant ramp-up (1,800 of 4,000 workers). Severity: high
  • AI data-center battery pivot unproven, first shipments not until 2028-2029. Severity: medium
  • US EV policy shifts (IRA Section 45X changes) directly affect Panasonic Energy US profitability. Severity: medium
  • China-Japan trade tensions and China's dominance in battery materials (nickel) supply chain. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Panasonic profitable in 2026?
Yes but declining. Panasonic Holdings reported FY2026 (ended March 2026) net profit of ¥189.5 billion, down 46% year over year, on consolidated sales of ¥8,048.7 billion, driven by restructuring charges and Automotive Systems deconsolidation, per its May 12, 2026 earnings release.
Is Panasonic losing market share in EV batteries?
Yes. As of April 2026, Panasonic ranks outside the global top 3 EV battery suppliers, behind CATL (about 39-45% share), BYD (14-19%), and LG Energy Solution (9-16%), grouped instead with CALB, Gotion and Svolt, per CnEVPost data from February and April 2026.
Is Panasonic laying off workers?
Yes. Panasonic announced in May 2025 it would cut about 10,000 jobs (5,000 in Japan, 5,000 overseas). By its May 12, 2026 FY2026 results, the actual reduction reached 12,000 employees worldwide as part of its group management reform.
Could AI replace Panasonic's Blue Yonder supply-chain software?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Blue Yonder itself pivoted fully to AI, stopping sales of non-cognitive products at the start of 2026 and launching five generative AI agents at ICON 2026 (May 18, 2026), using AI as a lock-in feature via its 3,000-plus customer network rather than being displaced by it.
Is Panasonic's EV battery business dependent on Tesla?
Heavily. Panasonic's FY2027 battery operating profit forecast of roughly ¥173 billion (about $1B) and a projected 19% rise in US battery demand to 46 GWh are explicitly tied to Tesla's market-share recovery, per a July 16, 2026 report, making it largely a single-customer bet.
Who is Panasonic's biggest competitor?
In EV batteries, CATL is the dominant rival with roughly 39-45% of global installations in 2025-2026 versus Panasonic's spot outside the top 3, per CnEVPost data from February 2026; in supply-chain software, Blue Yonder competes with SAP and Oracle.
