The call

Paradigm's survival looks locked in through fee income, but its next act rides on whether crypto stays hot and AI bets pay off.

Paradigm is a venture capital firm that invests in cryptocurrency and blockchain companies, and recently started investing in AI and robotics too. It is hard to replace because it built its own Ethereum software tools (Reth and Foundry) that give it early information about new projects and founders that other investors do not have, though a16z crypto is a close rival trying to do similar things. The big question is whether Paradigm's new $1.2 billion fund will actually work well in AI and robotics, which is completely new territory for them, or if they should stick mostly to crypto where they already know how to win.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI speeds up code audits and due diligence, which favors firms with deep technical infrastructure like Paradigm's Reth and Foundry. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: a16z crypto. a16z crypto is raising a $2B fund and competing head to head for the same founder deals and deployment flow. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its own Ethereum infrastructure, Reth and Foundry, gives Paradigm early visibility into which protocols and founders matter.
What would change this call
a16z crypto closes its targeted $2B fund by late 2026 and wins deals over Paradigm. would show Paradigm's flow advantage eroding to its top peer.
Kalshi valuation holds near $22B or falls after the Senate staff ban and regulatory scrutiny. tests whether Paradigm's largest recent bet retains value under regulatory pressure.
Fund IV capital deployment skews toward unproven AI/robotics deals over next 6 months. would indicate a reactive pivot rather than disciplined crypto-plus-selective strategy.

Questions people ask
Is Paradigm profitable in 2026?
Paradigm is a private VC partnership, not a revenue-generating operating company, so 'profitability' means fund performance. It took a $278M write-off on FTX (disclosed Oct 2023) but closed a new $1.2B Fund IV on July 8, 2026, suggesting continued LP confidence despite losses.
Who owns Paradigm?
Paradigm Operations LP is privately held, co-founded in June 2018 by Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam and ex-Sequoia partner Matt Huang. Huang and Managing Partner Alana Palmedo currently co-lead investing; Ehrsam stepped back to Senior Advisor in October 2023.
Could AI replace Paradigm as a VC firm?
Unlikely soon. AI can compress due-diligence and code-audit work, an area Paradigm itself targets with its OpenAI-built EVMbench benchmark, but VC relies on founder relationships, board seats, and LP trust built across four funds and $8.5B+ raised as of March 2026, which AI tools cannot replicate.
Who is Paradigm's biggest competitor?
a16z crypto is Paradigm's closest peer, with $7.6B+ raised and a roughly $2B fifth fund targeted for mid-2026 close, as of a March 28, 2026 Crypto Fund Research report. Polychain Capital is the other firm historically matching Paradigm's AUM in the crypto-native VC top tier.
Did Paradigm lose money on FTX?
Yes. Paradigm invested $278M in FTX starting with a July 2021 Series B check, which was written down to zero after FTX collapsed in November 2022, a loss partner Matt Huang discussed during the Sam Bankman-Fried criminal trial in October 2023.
How much money does Paradigm manage?
Paradigm reported AUM of $11.9B as of July 9, 2026, following the close of its $1.2B Fund IV on July 8, 2026, down from a $12.7B figure cited for April 2025, reflecting the broader 2025 crypto VC AUM contraction.
