The call

PatSnap has real enterprise customers and revenue, but is heading into an IPO with no CFO while AI tools chip at the search work it was built to sell.

PatSnap helps drug companies, aircraft makers, and chemical firms search patents and spot what competitors are working on. It has real customers paying real money, and those companies have built PatSnap into their daily routines, which makes it hard to rip out. However, ChatGPT, Claude, and new AI tools designed just for patents can now do basic patent searching almost as well and much cheaper, and Clarivate (an older competitor) is fighting hard to keep PatSnap from taking market share. The company might survive if it can lock customers into custom workflows and vertical-specific tools that go beyond just searching, but if customers start asking "why pay PatSnap when I can ask Claude for free," the business could shrink fast.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native patent search tools (Cypris, Perplexity Patents, IPRally) and general LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude. LLMs and new search tools threaten to commoditize basic prior-art lookup, the layer PatSnap built its business on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Clarivate (Derwent Innovation, Innography, Cortellis). Clarivate has more data history and money to rebuild Derwent as an AI product, but hasn't shipped that yet. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep workflow integrations and proprietary patent data inside biopharma, aerospace and chemicals teams that switch slowly.
What would change this call
Clarivate ships an AI-native Derwent Innovation rebuild within 12-18 months. Shows the unblocked incumbent can match PatSnap's AI positioning and erode its edge.
Independently verified enterprise logo win announced by Cypris or IPRally. Would show AI-native rivals converting threat into real customer losses for PatSnap.
PatSnap's HK/SG IPO prices and a CFO is named within 6 months of listing. Tests whether governance gaps and market conditions undermine the float.

Questions people ask
Is PatSnap profitable in 2026?
PatSnap has not disclosed profitability. It reported ARR surpassing $100M in Q2 2024 with 20% YoY revenue growth in 2023 (rising from $64.9M in 2021 to $97.7M in 2023 per a July 2026 equity research note), but no public profit or loss figures exist.
Could AI replace PatSnap's core product?
AI is already commoditizing PatSnap's basic patent search and prior-art workflows via tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and rivals such as Cypris and Perplexity Patents. PatSnap responded by launching MCP integrations in May 2026 to embed its data inside those same AI tools rather than compete purely on search.
Is PatSnap a safe company to join in 2026?
Headcount grew from 486 (2024) to 599 employees by Q1 2026 per Revelio Labs, signaling expansion not layoffs. However, the CFO seat has been vacant since Elyn Chen departed in April 2025 with no named successor as of a July 2026 research note, a governance risk during active IPO prep.
Who owns PatSnap?
PatSnap is privately owned, backed by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Tencent Investment, HongShan Capital, CPE Industrial Fund, Shunwei Capital, and Vertex Ventures, following a $300M Series E round in 2021 at roughly a $1B valuation, per PatSnap's own November 2023 funding announcement.
Is PatSnap going public?
Yes. PatSnap confidentially filed for a dual listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Singapore Exchange, reported June 15, 2026, targeting a raise of US$300-400M according to Bloomberg reporting from January 2026.
Who is PatSnap's biggest competitor?
Clarivate (via Derwent Innovation, Innography, and Cortellis) is PatSnap's closest large legacy competitor in patent and IP analytics, while AI-native entrant Cypris explicitly markets itself as a PatSnap alternative as of March 2026.
