Pharmaron
Chinese CRO/CDMO running drug discovery, development, and manufacturing for global pharma clients.
Pharmaron's business is growing and profitable, but its fate now hinges on whether US lawmakers widen a China-CRO blacklist that already caught its nearest rival.
Pharmaron runs factories in China, the UK, and the US that make experimental drugs for pharmaceutical companies worldwide. It is hard to replace because it has deep relationships with thousands of clients and offers everything under one roof, from early testing to full-scale production. But in December 2025, the US passed a law to limit Chinese involvement in American drug supply chains, and in June 2026, the US military added Pharmaron's main competitor, WuXi AppTec, to a restricted companies list, which could force that competitor to sell its US operations. If the US government adds Pharmaron to that same list in the next few years, Pharmaron would have to sell or close its American business, which would cut deep into profits and make the company much riskier to own.
Pharmaron's H1 2026 results versus its 12-18% FY2026 revenue guidance, especially US-client mix. Shows whether US customers are de-risking away from Pharmaron ahead of regulation.
Outcome of WuXi AppTec's legal challenge to its 1260H designation. A WuXi loss would strengthen the regulatory precedent threatening Pharmaron's US business.
- Over 3,300 global customers served in 2025
- FY2026 guidance: 12-18% revenue growth
- Bioscience over 55% of lab-services revenue in H1 2025
- BIOSECURE Act and possible expansion of 1260H/BCC list to include Pharmaron, forcing US revenue divestment.
- AI-native discovery platforms eroding fee-for-service discovery-chemistry demand.
- FY2026 guidance of 12-18% growth not holding amid US-China friction and sector overhang.
- Broader CDMO reshoring trend pressuring non-US-based manufacturing competitiveness for US-bound work.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| WuXi AppTec | contesting | Named to US DoD 1260H list June 8, 2026, creating regulatory precedent Pharmaron does not yet face |
| Insilico Medicine and Bora Pharmaceuticals | losing to | $2.5B AI plus CDMO alliance announced July 2026 combines discovery and manufacturing, mirroring Pharmaron's pitch |
| Iambic Therapeutics | losing to | Signed $1.7B AI drug-discovery deal with Takeda April 2026, diverting early-stage discovery work |
| Thermo Fisher, Charles River | contesting | Top 4 global players hold estimated 45-50% combined drug-discovery-services market share as of 2026 |
| Chai Discovery, Noetik, Boltz | losing to | Signed AI discovery deals with Lilly, GSK, and Pfizer respectively in January 2026 |
- Is Pharmaron profitable in 2026?
- Yes. Pharmaron reported FY2025 revenue of about CNY 14.1 billion (~$2.0B), up 14.82% YoY, with core net profit excluding one-off items up 38.85% YoY to CNY 1.54 billion, and guided 12-18% revenue growth for FY2026 as of March 2026.
- Could AI replace Pharmaron's drug discovery services?
- Partially. AI-native platforms like Chai Discovery (Lilly), Noetik (GSK), and Boltz (Pfizer), all announced January 2026, are pulling early discovery-chemistry work in-house, but Pharmaron's GMP manufacturing, clinical trials, and 3,300+ client relationships remain largely AI-resistant as of 2026.
- Is Pharmaron facing the same US regulatory risk as WuXi AppTec?
- Not yet formally. The BIOSECURE Act became US law December 18, 2025, and the DoD added WuXi AppTec to its 1260H military-companies list on June 8, 2026. Pharmaron has not been named to that list as of July 2026, but sector overhang exists.
- Who is Pharmaron's biggest competitor?
- WuXi AppTec is Pharmaron's closest direct rival, offering a similarly integrated China-based CRO/CDMO platform. Both companies, alongside Thermo Fisher and Charles River, are estimated to hold 45-50% combined share of the global drug-discovery-services market as of mid-2026.
- Who owns Pharmaron?
- Pharmaron is publicly traded and dual-listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (300759.SZ, since January 2019) and Hong Kong Stock Exchange (3759.HK, since November 2019), founder-led by Dr. Boliang Lou, Xiaoqiang Lou, and Bei Zheng, who founded the company in Beijing on July 1, 2004.
- What is Pharmaron's market cap in 2026?
- As of late July 2026, Pharmaron's market capitalization was approximately CNY 60.2 billion, roughly $8.3 billion, according to gurufocus.com data dated July 30, 2026.
