The call

PicMonkey sits inside a shrinking parent company, competing against free AI features built into much larger design tools.

PicMonkey is an online photo editor that lets everyday people and small businesses add filters, remove backgrounds, and use design templates without needing advanced software. Canva and Adobe Express already do most of the same things at much larger scale, and free AI tools now handle background removal and photo touch-ups automatically, making PicMonkey's core features less unique. The only real advantage PicMonkey has is access to Shutterstock's licensed photo library (which protects users from copyright issues), but Shutterstock is moving that protection directly into its own website instead of keeping it exclusive to PicMonkey, which means that benefit could disappear.

Why
01
AI pressure: Canva AI and Adobe Express AI features (background removal, templates, touch-up). Free AI tools now do PicMonkey's core jobs, template design, cutouts, retouching, inside bigger apps. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Canva and Adobe Express. Both already run the same SMB design market at far larger scale, often bundled free or with Creative Cloud. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Bundled access to Shutterstock's licensed photo library gives some users a reason to stay put.

Questions people ask
Is PicMonkey profitable in 2026?
PicMonkey was profitable before its 2021 acquisition, but no standalone financials have been reported since. Its parent Shutterstock posted a $47.6M net loss on $199.2M revenue (down 18% YoY) in Q1 2026, per Shutterstock's April 28, 2026 earnings release, with no PicMonkey-specific breakout.
Could AI replace PicMonkey?
Yes. PicMonkey's core workflows, templates, background removal, and photo touch-up, are now natively replicated by generative AI tools, often for free, according to a June 11, 2026 ITQlick review citing pricing pressure from free AI presentation tools.
Who owns PicMonkey?
Shutterstock, Inc. (NYSE: SSTK) has owned PicMonkey since acquiring it for $110 million in cash on September 7, 2021, per Shutterstock's own press release, folding it in alongside brands like Offset and TurboSquid.
Is PicMonkey losing to Canva?
Yes. Canva and Adobe Express already dominate the same SMB and consumer design category PicMonkey occupies, at far greater scale, with no structural moat identified for PicMonkey to defend its position as of July 2026.
What happened to the Getty Images and Shutterstock merger?
Getty Images terminated the planned $3.7 billion merger of equals with Shutterstock in early July 2026 (reported July 7, 2026) after the UK Competition and Markets Authority demanded divestiture of Shutterstock's editorial business.
What is PicMonkey's biggest competitor?
Canva and Adobe Express are PicMonkey's closest rivals; Adobe Express is bundled free with Creative Cloud while Canva has scaled into a full enterprise design suite, both undercutting PicMonkey's subscription-based model as of mid-2026.
