The call

Pigment is growing fast by taking migration deals from Anaplan and legacy tools, but it's racing well-funded rivals like OneStream and Workday Adaptive in the same crowded field, not sitting in a locked category.

Pigment sells planning and forecasting software that companies use to manage budgets and make decisions. It is hard to replace because companies invest heavily in setting it up, connecting it to their other systems, and training their teams to use it, which creates sticky relationships. But other companies like OneStream, Workday Adaptive, and Planful offer similar products and have deep pockets to compete, so Pigment's advantage is real but not unbreakable. The big question is whether Pigment can keep winning customers away from these rivals and keep growing as fast as it has been, especially if companies cut back on technology spending in 2026.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT/Claude used for ad-hoc what-if analysis outside governed systems. Generic chat AI can already do quick planning math, pulling small buyers away from paying for a dedicated platform. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Workday Adaptive Planning. Embedded inside Workday shops today; the open question is whether it pushes into multi-stack accounts Pigment currently wins. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Governed planning data, deep ERP integrations, and migration lock-in make ripping Pigment out costly once it's the system of record.
What would change this call
Workday Adaptive Planning ships AI-native features and pursues non-Workday multi-stack deals. Would show the incumbent closing Pigment's AI and neutrality advantage.
Anaplan under Thoma Bravo announces a major AI roadmap or new ownership/IPO move. Would show the legacy incumbent modernizing faster than expected, narrowing Pigment's opening.
Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant for financial planning software is published. Would show whether Pigment holds or loses its Visionary standing versus rivals.
Key numbers
  • Approaching $100M ARR after three years of ARR doubling (2026-03-04)
  • 56% of 2025 new customers migrated from a legacy vendor (2026-03-04)
  • $145M Series D led by ICONIQ Growth (2024-04-04)
Named risks
  • Crowded field of similarly resourced rivals (OneStream, Workday Adaptive) not structurally barred from matching AI features. Severity: high
  • Key growth stats (56% migration rate, ARR figures) are vendor claimed and unaudited. Severity: medium
  • 2026 enterprise budget squeeze and AI driven tech layoffs at hyperscalers could slow deal cycles. Severity: medium
  • Gartner Visionary rather than Leader status signals not yet category leadership versus larger incumbents. Severity: medium
  • Generic LLM chat tools could erode low end ad hoc what-if analysis demand among smaller customers. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Pigment profitable in 2026?
Profitability is not disclosed. Pigment announced on March 4, 2026 it was approaching $100M ARR after doubling ARR for three consecutive years, a growth claim from the company itself, but no net income or profitability figures have been published.
Could AI replace Pigment?
Unlikely soon. Pigment's value sits in governed, permissioned planning data tied to ERPs like SAP and Workday. Generic LLMs threaten only ad hoc low end analysis, and Pigment launched an MCP server on November 18, 2025 so tools like Claude and ChatGPT query into Pigment rather than replace it.
Who is Pigment's biggest competitor?
Anaplan and Workday Adaptive Planning are Pigment's closest rivals in connected planning software, alongside OneStream, Board, Vena and Planful. Anaplan has been owned by Vista Equity Partners and Thoma Bravo since a 2022 take private, which analysts say slowed its modernization.
Who owns Pigment?
Pigment is privately held and venture backed, founded in 2019 by Eleonore Crespo and Romain Niccoli. It raised a $145M Series D in April 2024 led by ICONIQ Growth and reached roughly $1B valuation by 2024 to 2025, with no acquisition or public listing reported.
How much revenue does Pigment make?
Pigment said on March 4, 2026 it was approaching $100M in annual recurring revenue, having doubled ARR for three straight years, a company reported figure. Independent revenue figures are not confirmed; TechCrunch reported Pigment tripled revenue in 2023 based on company disclosure.
Is Pigment a Gartner Leader in planning software?
Not yet. Pigment was named a Visionary, not a Leader, in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Financial Planning Software for the second consecutive year as of the December 2025 report, positioning it as a fast growing challenger rather than category leader.
