The call

A profitable but shrinking social-casino business is selling its growth engine to Tencent while a $2.3B debt wall looms in 2028-29.

Playtika makes casual mobile games like solitaire and slots that people play for fun. The company used to be hard to compete with because its team was really good at keeping players coming back and spending money, but that skill is now being copied: a company called Kinoa started by former Playtika workers is selling AI software that does the same job, and Playtika itself is laying off workers because AI can do more of their work. The picture could change completely if Playtika sells its best game (Disney Solitaire) to Tencent and then either gets bought entirely or stays independent and slowly shrinks while trying to pay back billions of dollars it owes.

Why
01
AI pressure: Kinoa, an AI LiveOps automation startup founded by former Playtika staff. Kinoa packages Playtika's own LiveOps playbook into AI agents and sells it to rivals, undercutting the skill that made Playtika money. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Tencent (in talks to acquire SuperPlay, Playtika's Disney Solitaire studio). Tencent is reportedly buying Playtika's fastest-growing unit for $1 to $1.5 billion, stripping out the one part of the business that was still growing. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Strong free cash flow ($481.6M in FY2025) and a fast-growing direct-to-consumer channel buy time against the debt wall, but no product edge blocks copying.

Questions people ask
Is Playtika profitable in 2026?
FY2025 revenue was $2.755B with adjusted EBITDA of $753.2M (27.3% margin), but GAAP net loss was $206.4M due to SuperPlay earnout charges. Q1 2026 revenue hit $744.7M yet still posted a GAAP EPS loss of -$0.15 as of March 31, 2026.
Is Playtika laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. Playtika cut 15% of staff (~500-525 employees) in January 2026, its fifth round since 2022, shrinking headcount 22% from 3,732 (2023) to 2,911 (December 2025). CEO Robert Antokol framed it as a shift to AI-supported leaner teams.
Could AI replace Playtika's LiveOps jobs?
CEO Antokol said January 2026's 15% layoff reflected a move to teams 'supported by AI and automation.' Underscoring the trend, Playtika alumni founded Kinoa in June 2026, raising $10M to sell AI-agent LiveOps automation to rival mobile game studios.
Who owns Playtika?
Playtika is publicly traded on NASDAQ (PLTK) since its January 2021 IPO. It was previously owned by Caesars Entertainment (from 2011) then a Chinese consortium led by Giant's Shi Yuzhu ($4.4B, July 2016); a 2022 Joffre Capital stake deal collapsed in December 2022.
Is Playtika being sold or broken up?
Playtika's board launched a formal strategic-alternatives review in April 2026 with Morgan Stanley advising, and as of July 20-21, 2026 was reportedly negotiating to sell its SuperPlay/Disney Solitaire unit to Tencent for $1-1.5B.
Who is Playtika's biggest competitor?
Direct rivals include Zynga (owned by Take-Two), Scopely (owned by Savvy Games Group), and Aristocrat Leisure's Product Madness. Tencent is emerging as a direct threat, reportedly negotiating to acquire Playtika's growth engine SuperPlay as of July 2026.
