The call

Plum has a licence, users, and a claimed profit, but Monzo already builds the same savings and investing tools into a banking app people use every day.

Plum is a money app that helps people save and invest automatically, with AI that gives financial advice. The problem is that Monzo, a much bigger bank with 15 million customers, has already started offering the exact same savings and investment features built directly into its app, so people have no reason to download a separate app when their main bank can do it. The one thing that could save Plum is if Monzo and other big banks take more than a year to add all the investment options (like ISAs and pension accounts) that Plum offers, but that seems unlikely.

Why
01
AI pressure: General AI assistants like Google Gemini and ChatGPT. Plum's own AI tool runs on Gemini, so the budgeting and investing tips it gives can be copied by any bank or chatbot using the same model. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Monzo (15.2M customers, native savings and investment pots). Monzo already has round-ups, savings pots, and BlackRock-managed investing built into its main banking app, the same pitch Plum sells as a separate download. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A new FCA electronic money licence, 5M+ downloads, and claimed profitability give Plum standing, but none of that stops a bank from shipping the same features free inside an app people already use.
What would change this call
Monzo, Starling, or Revolut launch a full Cash ISA plus SIPP with AI-guided investing within 12 months. Would show incumbent banks can replicate Plum's full product suite natively.
Plum's FY2025 or Q1 2026 Companies House statutory filings are published. Would confirm or contradict Plum's self-reported January 2026 profitability claim.
Outcome and final valuation of Plum's May 2026 Crowdcube raise. Would show whether investors back founders' valuation or price it down.
Key numbers

  • January 2026 profitability claim is self-reported and unaudited pending Companies House statutory filings. Severity: medium
  • UK Cash ISA allowance cap policy change by HMRC could hit one of Plum's core product lines. Severity: medium
  • New FCA EMI safeguarding rules effective 2026-05-07 add compliance burden following December 2025 AEMI licence grant. Severity: low
  • Widely divergent funding and valuation figures across trackers create uncertainty ahead of active May 2026 crowdfunding round. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Plum profitable in 2026?
Plum says it reached operational profitability (positive EBITDA) in January 2026, per its own self-reported, unaudited announcement covered by FF News on 2026-04-27. No Companies House statutory filing has yet confirmed this, so the claim remains company-sourced only.
Who owns Plum the savings app?
Plum is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2016 by Victor Trokoudes (ex-Wise). It was still raising capital via an active Crowdcube retail crowdfunding round as of May 2026, alongside prior Series B and BBVA venture debt funding.
What is Plum's biggest competitor?
Monzo is Plum's biggest threat: as of May 2026 Monzo had 15.2 million+ customers and £25 billion+ deposits, offering native savings pots, round-ups and BlackRock-managed investment pots, versus Plum's 5 million downloads. Moneybox and Chip are its closer direct app peers.
Could AI replace Plum?
Plum's own AI tools (Plum AI, and Plum Plan launched June 2026) are built on Google's Gemini via Google Cloud, meaning its core guidance features rely on the same commodity AI that incumbent banks and general assistants can replicate, per Plum's own 2025-2026 press releases.
Does Plum have a UK banking or investment licence?
Plum was granted a full FCA Authorised Electronic Money Institution (AEMI) licence on 2025-12-08, letting it hold and process e-money directly. Its Saveable Limited entity, trading as Plum Money, is a separately FCA-authorised investment firm.
How many users does Plum have?
Plum reports 5 million+ downloads across Europe as of mid-2026, up from 2 million between 2023 and 2025 and 1.3 million in 2022, according to the company's own press materials, not independently audited.
