The call

Precisely's mainframe and location data lock-in keeps it alive while Microsoft and Databricks fight it for the cloud governance budget that funds its future.

Precisely cleans up, matches, and organizes data for Fortune 100 companies, making messy databases usable. It has real staying power in old mainframe systems (where IBM runs the back office for banks and insurers) and owns location data from its Pitney Bowes past, which keeps customers from easily switching. But the growth part of the business, cloud data governance, faces direct competition from Microsoft and Databricks, who already have working products inside those same Fortune 100 accounts. AI tools that can now do basic data cleaning and deduplication automatically make it cheaper and easier for mid-sized companies to build their own data pipelines instead of buying Precisely. The real question is whether the new sales leadership (arriving July 2026) can win new cloud deals against Microsoft and Databricks, or whether Precisely becomes a slow-growing cash machine that its owner, Clearlake Capital, eventually sells to a bigger company.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Copilot for data and Databricks Unity Catalog with AI/BI Genie. LLM agents now auto-clean, match, and tag data, work Precisely used to sell as services, cutting the reason to hire it. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Purview plus Fabric) and Databricks (Unity Catalog). Both are already inside Precisely's Fortune 100 accounts selling cloud-native governance that competes directly with its growth product. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Decades of mainframe integration on IBM z/OS plus Pitney Bowes location data lock in switching costs across 95 Fortune 100 clients.
What would change this call
Precisely discloses double-digit revenue growth or Clearlake announces an exit/IPO within 12 months. Would show the cloud-native pivot is working, not just the mainframe cash cow surviving.
New CRO/CBO (installed July 2026) departs or Precisely announces another reorg within 6-12 months. Would show the go-to-market overhaul against Microsoft/Databricks is stumbling.
A credit downgrade, refinancing event, or another dividend recap by Clearlake surfaces in press. Would show balance-sheet distress under 10+ years of PE ownership.
Key numbers
  • ~$525M to $652M estimated revenue (2026-07-19)
  • 95 Fortune 100 companies as customers (2026-07-01)
  • Clearlake closed $14.8B Fund VIII (2026-06-16)
Named risks
  • Opaque private financials and debt structure under decade-plus PE ownership could hide refinance/credit risk. Severity: high
  • Microsoft and Databricks shipping native agentic data-integrity tools directly threaten Precisely's cloud-native growth segment. Severity: high
  • Flat headcount (about 3,024 to 3,161 range per third-party trackers) alongside unclear revenue growth suggests stalled expansion. Severity: medium
  • Simultaneous CEO (April 2026) and CRO/CBO (July 2026) transitions create execution risk during a go-to-market overhaul. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Precisely profitable in 2026?
Precisely is privately held under Clearlake Capital and TA Associates after a reported 3.5 billion dollar reacquisition in March 2021, and does not disclose audited financials. No profitability figures have been made public as of July 2026, despite continued product and executive investment.
Who owns Precisely?
Precisely is owned by private equity firms Clearlake Capital and TA Associates, who reacquired it from Centerbridge Partners in a deal reported at 3.5 billion dollars in March 2021. Insight Partners and Partners Group added a strategic investment in April 2022.
Could AI replace Precisely's services?
Precisely itself is automating rules-based data cleansing, matching and metadata tagging via its Gio AI Assistant and agent suite, launched between September 2025 and May 2026, which could compress services revenue and lower switching costs for customers building pipelines in-house.
Is Precisely laying off staff in 2026?
No formal layoffs are publicly reported. Precisely appointed new CEO Walid Abu-Hadba in April 2026 and new CRO Vinesh Vis and CBO Jane Gilson in July 2026 as part of a go-to-market overhaul, while overall headcount has stayed roughly flat since 2024.
Who is Precisely's biggest competitor?
Precisely names Informatica, Qlik, IBM, Snowflake, Cloudera, TIBCO Software and Acxiom as competitors, and faces mounting pressure from Microsoft Purview/Fabric and Databricks Unity Catalog, both shipped cloud native tools contesting the same Fortune 100 accounts in 2026.
Is Precisely a safe company to join in 2026?
Precisely is a mature, decade-plus PE-owned firm with flat headcount and no public financial disclosures. It just underwent a CEO change in April 2026 and CRO/CBO hires in July 2026, signaling active strategic repositioning rather than crisis or high-growth hiring.
