The call

A viral 2022 hit built on open Stable Diffusion, now facing free native rivals from every major platform and a revenue base far below its peak.

Prisma Labs is an app that uses artificial intelligence to turn your photos into artistic styles, like paintings or cartoons. The problem is that the technology behind it (called Stable Diffusion) is free and available to anyone, so Adobe, Instagram, Snapchat, Apple, Google, and ChatGPT can all build the same thing into their own apps and already are. The app went from hugely popular in late 2022 (making $70 million a year) to much smaller today (making $5.5 to $20 million), and the company hasn't raised new funding since 2019. The one thing that could save Prisma would be if it found a way to offer something these bigger companies cannot, but right now it looks like a trend that peaked and is now just a feature competitors added to their platforms.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Instagram native image/avatar generation. Free avatar and photo generation now built into ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Instagram gives users the same result without installing Lensa. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Adobe, Snapchat, Apple and Google camera AI. Adobe, Snap, and phone makers already bundle similar retouching and avatar tools free with their existing apps and cameras. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Occasional viral download spikes, like December 2025, and brand recognition from the 2022 avatar boom still pull in casual users.
What would change this call
Prisma Labs' reported annualized revenue in future ZoomInfo/Latka updates versus current $5.5M-$20M range. Whether the revenue collapse from the 2022 peak continues or stabilizes.
Outcome or settlement of Flora v. Prisma Labs BIPA arbitration. Whether biometric-privacy litigation imposes material costs or restrictions on operations.
Whether Instagram, Snapchat, or a phone OEM ships a built-in avatar generator matching Lensa's feature set. Further commoditization of Lensa's core product by platforms with distribution advantages.

Questions people ask
Is Prisma Labs profitable in 2026?
Unclear from public data. Prisma Labs (Lensa app maker) hit over $70 million in revenue in November 2022 alone per a company official cited by NPR on 2023-01-20, but has raised no new equity since its 2019 Series A and current revenue figures are not confirmed by primary financial disclosures.
Who owns Prisma Labs?
Yuri Gurski, founder of Cyprus-based startup studio Palta, owns the majority of Prisma Labs' shares as of January 2023, per NPR reporting. Palta also lists Lensa maker Prisma Labs among its portfolio companies on its own site.
Could AI like ChatGPT or Gemini replace Lensa and Prisma Labs?
Yes, that risk is structural. Lensa is built on Stability AI's open-source Stable Diffusion (launched August 2022), and free native avatar/image generation in ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Instagram already replicates its core feature with no proprietary moat protecting Prisma Labs.
Is Prisma Labs facing any lawsuits?
Yes. Flora et al. v. Prisma Labs, an Illinois BIPA biometric-privacy class action over Magic Avatars, was filed February 2023, compelled to arbitration in August 2023, and was still being analyzed as of November 2025. A related case, Brantley v. Prisma Labs, was dismissed for lack of standing in August 2024.
Who is Prisma Labs' biggest competitor?
Direct app-category rivals include Remini, FaceApp, Dawn AI, Meitu and Prequel, all named by TechCrunch/Apptopia as peers in the 2022 AI photo app wave. Bigger structural threats come from Adobe, Snapchat/Instagram, and native camera AI from Apple and Google, which offer similar features for free.
Has Prisma Labs raised new funding recently?
No new equity round has been publicly reported since its $6 million Series A in April 2019, led by Haxus. A 2026 case study from lender Braavo describes providing revenue-based financing for user acquisition, which Prisma Labs describes (per the vendor) as helping quadruple revenue and triple its user base.
