The call

Privy already won the wallet-infrastructure fight on its own merits, and now runs inside Stripe's payment stack instead of racing alone against Coinbase.

Privy lets developers add crypto wallets to their apps without building from scratch. It is hard to replace because it connects to Stripe's payment network, banking licenses, and stablecoin support, which competitors like Coinbase Developer Platform and Fireblocks cannot easily match on their own. The main thing to watch is whether Stripe keeps Privy as a separate product or folds it into a generic team, and whether major customers like Uniswap and Klarna stay loyal if Stripe changes its crypto strategy.

Why
01
AI pressure: Coinbase AgentKit and rival AI agent-payment protocols. AI agents need wallets to pay each other, and Coinbase's AgentKit competes for that plumbing before Privy locks in the standard. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Coinbase Developer Platform and Fireblocks. Both ship competing wallet infrastructure, though Uniswap still picked Privy over them for now. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Stripe's fiat rails, licensing, and card network access, which pure crypto rivals cannot easily copy.
What would change this call
Privy remains a distinctly branded, standalone team inside Stripe rather than merged into a generic crypto unit. Shows Stripe still values Privy's product identity and roadmap independence.
Uniswap, OpenSea, or Hyperliquid publicly switch wallet infrastructure away from Privy. Would show Stripe ownership isn't preventing anchor-logo defection to Coinbase or Fireblocks.
Coinbase Developer Platform or Fireblocks announces 2-3 new flagship wallet-infra clients previously on Privy. Would indicate rivals are converting Privy's target market despite Stripe backing.
Key numbers
  • 100M+ user accounts as of Nov 2025 (2025-11-21)
  • Stripe paid roughly $1.1B for Bridge in Feb 2025, same crypto push (2025-06-17)
  • 115M+ monthly signatures processed (2025-11-21)
Named risks
  • Stripe could fold Privy into a generic crypto team, ending standalone product status. Severity: high
  • Regulatory shift licensing non-custodial embedded wallets outside Stripe's coverage in US/EU. Severity: medium
  • Loss of a flagship logo such as Uniswap, OpenSea, or Hyperliquid to a rival. Severity: medium
  • Public revenue and headcount figures are stale or conflicting across sources. Severity: low
  • Fast-moving AI-agent payment standards (x402 vs Bedrock AgentCore vs rivals) could shift adoption away. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Privy profitable as a standalone business?
Privy has not disclosed standalone profitability. It was acquired by Stripe on June 11, 2025, and now operates as a Stripe product line; Stripe does not break out segment financials for Privy, so no profit/loss figures are public.
Who owns Privy now?
Stripe acquired Privy on June 11, 2025, following its ~$1.1B purchase of stablecoin firm Bridge in February 2025. Privy's legal entity was originally incorporated as Horkos Inc. and continues operating as a standalone product under Stripe.
Could AI replace Privy's wallet infrastructure?
AI coding assistants can automate SDK boilerplate, but Privy's SOC 2 Type II certification (Dec 2024), key-sharding architecture, and Stripe-backed fiat/card rails aren't replicable by a model alone. Privy itself reports one-third of new developer signups building AI agents as of June 25, 2026.
Is joining Privy a safe career move?
Privy is backed by Stripe, valued at $159B as of Feb 24, 2026, and serves marquee customers including Uniswap (won June 4, 2026), OpenSea, and Klarna. Risk exists if Stripe folds Privy into a generic crypto team rather than keeping it standalone.
Who is Privy's biggest competitor?
Coinbase Developer Platform and Fireblocks (which acquired rival Dynamic in October 2025) are the closest competitors in embedded wallet infrastructure. Privy still won the flagship Uniswap bake-off in June 2026, suggesting it is not currently losing share.
How many users or accounts does Privy power?
Privy reported 75M+ accounts and 1,000+ developer teams at the time of its Stripe acquisition in June 2025, growing to 100M+ user accounts and 115M+ monthly signatures by November 21, 2025.
