The call

Public's license keeps AI models out of its custody business, but Robinhood, nine times its size and growing faster, can copy its AI features without needing to break any wall.

Public.com lets regular people buy stocks, crypto, and other assets through an app that uses AI to help with trading decisions. The company built its own trading infrastructure from scratch, which keeps out pure AI competitors that don't have a licensed brokerage. The real problem is Robinhood: it is nine times bigger, growing much faster, and has the money and reach to copy every feature Public builds. Robinhood can also do everything Public does, just with way more users seeing it. The one thing that could shift this: if Robinhood takes years to launch its own AI trading assistant, Public keeps winning new users who want that feature first.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models can't hold custody or clear trades, so chatbots can't replace Public's broker-dealer function directly. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Robinhood. Robinhood has 27M users versus Public's 3M, grew assets 68% year over year, and can copy any AI feature Public ships. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FINRA broker-dealer and SEC adviser registration, which takes real time and licensing to replicate.
What would change this call
Robinhood ships an agentic-brokerage or AI-portfolio-agent feature within 12 months. Would show Public's core differentiator is copyable, not a durable moat.
Public's member count growth rate versus Robinhood's over the next 4 quarters. Widening gap would show Public losing the scale race despite its AI head start.
Public announces IRA or 401(k) rollover support. Would show Public closing the retirement-account lock-in gap versus Schwab and Fidelity.

Questions people ask
Is Public.com profitable in 2026?
Public is private and does not publish audited financials. A 2025 aggregator estimate put revenue near $174.4M for 2025, and a January 2026 fintech newsletter claimed 'core profitability,' but neither figure is independently verified by Public itself.
Could AI replace Public.com's brokerage?
No, not fully: Public is a FINRA/SIPC broker-dealer with an SEC-registered adviser (Public Advisors LLC), and custody of assets legally requires a licensed broker. But its own 'Alpha' research assistant runs on OpenAI's GPT-4, making its smart features a wrapper, not proprietary tech.
Who is Public.com's biggest competitor?
Robinhood, which ended 2025 with 27.0 million funded customers and $324B in platform assets (+68% YoY per SEC filings), versus Public's roughly 3 million members as of March 2026. Robinhood can copy Public's AI features while outspending and out-distributing it.
Who owns Public.com?
Public Holdings, Inc. is privately held, led by co-CEOs Leif Abraham and Jannick Malling as of March 2026. It has been backed by Accel, Tiger Global, Greycroft, and Inspired Capital across rounds including a $220M Series D at a $1.2B valuation in February 2021.
What is Public.com's current valuation?
Sources conflict: a July 2026 analysis (litmus.lapaas.com) put Public near $2B in 2025, up from a $1.2B 2021 Series D valuation, while a September 2025 data aggregator cited a much lower $523.2M figure. No confirmed new valuation round has settled the discrepancy as of mid-2026.
Does Public.com offer retirement accounts like an IRA or 401(k)?
As of May 25, 2026, Public still lacked traditional IRA, Roth IRA, and 401(k) rollover support, a notable gap versus Robinhood, Schwab, and Fidelity, all of which use retirement-account lock-in as a switching-cost moat that Public does not yet have.
