The call

PubMatic is profitable and holds real publisher plumbing, but headline revenue keeps shrinking while The Trade Desk's direct model chips at the fee it lives on.

PubMatic is a company that helps publishers (websites and streaming services) sell their advertising space to the highest bidder, sort of like an auctioneer for ads. It has built real tools that 2,000+ publishers use and makes money doing this, but its revenue is actually shrinking while its main competitor Magnite is growing. The Trade Desk, a much bigger company, is trying to cut out the middleman entirely and let publishers sell ads directly, which would make PubMatic's service less valuable or unneeded. PubMatic says it has new AI technology that could save customers money and win back business, but so far that hasn't stopped the revenue from falling, so the real question is whether this technology can turn things around in the second half of 2026 and get customers to spend more money again.

Why
01
AI pressure: The Trade Desk OpenPath and agentic buying tools. Agentic buying lets ad buyers route straight to publishers, cutting out the SSP fee PubMatic depends on. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: The Trade Desk. OpenPath reclassifies SSPs like PubMatic as resellers and offers publishers a direct path, squeezing take rates. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep publisher integrations (2,000+) and OpenWrap SDK plus 28 of the top 30 streamers give buyers no easy way around it yet.
What would change this call
PubMatic H2 2026 revenue growth returns to double digits as management guided. Would show the AI/CTV push is reversing the customer/revenue slide.
PubMatic net dollar retention rises above 100% from current 96%. Would show existing customers spending more, not less.
The Trade Desk reports accelerating OpenPath direct-publisher deal volume. Would show buyers bypassing SSPs like PubMatic, confirming fee compression.

Questions people ask
Is PubMatic profitable in 2026?
Yes. PubMatic posted its 40th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA through Q1 2026 and held $146M cash with zero debt at year-end 2025, even as FY2025 total revenue fell about 3% YoY to $282.9M.
Is PubMatic's revenue growing or shrinking?
Shrinking on headline numbers: Q1 2026 revenue was $62.6M, down from $63.8M a year earlier, and Q2 2026 guidance of $68-70M implies a 2-4% YoY decline. Management says double-digit growth should return in H2 2026.
Who is PubMatic's biggest competitor?
Magnite is PubMatic's closest independent SSP rival, posting FY2025 revenue of $714.0M, up 7% YoY, versus PubMatic's $282.9M, down 3%. The Trade Desk's OpenPath also threatens PubMatic by pulling publishers into direct deals.
Could AI replace PubMatic?
PubMatic is using AI itself via AgenticOS, launched Jan 5, 2026, which processed over 1,000 AI-powered deals and cut unit processing costs about 20% by May 2026. The bigger risk is agentic buying compressing SSP take rates industry-wide, not outright replacement.
Is PubMatic a safe company to join in 2026?
Headcount is roughly flat to slightly declining, estimated at 1,006-1,276 employees as of mid-2026 depending on source. The company is profitable with $146M cash and no debt as of Dec 31, 2025, but revenue has declined for two straight periods.
Who owns PubMatic?
PubMatic is a publicly traded company on Nasdaq under ticker PUBM, having IPO'd on December 9, 2020. Co-founder Rajeev Goel remains CEO, and there is no parent company; capital allocation has shifted to share buybacks, with $190M repurchased since Feb 2023.
