The call

Qcells leads US solar sales today, but its profits lean on tax credits and import rules that Washington can still rewrite.

Qcells makes solar panels and cells in the United States and sells more residential solar panels than anyone else in America. It has real advantages: it owns its own factory in Georgia that makes solar cells, and it benefits from government tax credits that pay makers for manufacturing domestically. The problem is that these government payments and trade rules protecting U.S. makers are being reduced starting next year, and a direct competitor called First Solar gets the same credits and protections. The one thing that could change everything is whether Congress keeps, cuts, or kills the tax credits and deadline rules that currently make Qcells profitable; if those go away, the company's losses could grow much worse.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI models don't make cells or wafers, so no AI product competes with Qcells' physical manufacturing. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: First Solar. First Solar runs its own US factories, claims the same 45X credits and clean-supply-chain story, and competes directly for the same buyers. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. US tariffs, forced-labor import bans, and Section 45X credits favor Qcells' Georgia-made cells over Chinese-linked supply.
What would change this call
Section 45X credit terms survive or are cut in the next US budget cycle before the Jan 1, 2028 deadline. Shows whether Qcells' profitability floor (subsidy dependence) holds or erodes.
Recurrence of US Customs (UFLPA) forced-labor detentions on Qcells' Georgia supply chain within 6 months. Shows whether Nov 2025 to Mar 2026 furlough disruption was one-off or a recurring operational weakness.
Renewables segment reports operating profit for 2+ consecutive quarters without an ASP or subsidy spike. Shows whether Qcells can be profitable independent of policy tailwinds.
Key numbers
  • 38.5% of US residential solar module market, #1 for 7-8 years (2026-06-10)
  • $675 million expected from Section 45X credits in 2026 (2026-06-10)
  • 8.6 GW/year Georgia manufacturing capacity by Q3 2026 (2026-06-11)
Named risks
  • Recurring US Customs/UFLPA detentions of imported components disrupting Georgia production. Severity: high
  • OBBBA rollback of IRA credits with July 5, 2026 construction-start deadline threatens EPC demand pipeline. Severity: high
  • Profitability heavily dependent on Section 45X manufacturing credits subject to legislative change. Severity: high
  • REC Silicon polysilicon supply chain financial distress and delisting tender uncertainty. Severity: medium
  • Global Chinese manufacturer price pressure on module margins outside protected US market. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Qcells profitable in 2026?
Mixed. Hanwha Solutions' Q4 2025 renewables segment posted an operating loss, but Q1 2026 group operating profit turned positive, up 3% QoQ to KRW 3.88 trillion revenue, helped by U.S. policy shifts and supply-driven ASP gains, as of 2026-05-14.
Who owns Qcells?
Qcells is a wholly owned solar division of Hanwha Solutions Corporation (KRX: 009830), a publicly listed South Korean chemicals and energy affiliate of Hanwha Group, as confirmed in company press materials dated 2026-04-01.
Is Qcells the biggest solar panel maker in the US?
Yes for modules sold domestically. Qcells held roughly 38.5% of the U.S. residential solar module market and 15.5% of commercial, ranked #1 in both for 7-8 straight years per Wood Mackenzie data cited on 2026-06-10.
Who is Qcells' biggest competitor?
First Solar is Qcells' closest U.S. rival, competing head-to-head in residential and commercial modules while sharing the same Section 45X manufacturing credits and UFLPA-clean supply chain positioning as of 2026-07.
Did Qcells lay off workers?
Yes. Between November 2025 and March 2026, Qcells furloughed about 1,000 Georgia workers (25% of that workforce) and laid off 300 staffing-agency workers after U.S. Customs detained imported components under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.
Could AI replace Qcells?
No. Qcells' core business is capital-intensive physical cell and module manufacturing plus EPC construction, which AI cannot substitute for. Qcells itself deploys AI only as an add-on, earning the first UL 3115 AI-safety certification for a data-center energy-management product on 2026-03-27.
