The call

QuantumScape has the cells and the cash to keep going, but Toyota and Samsung SDI are racing toward volume production before VW even reaches 2029 start of production.

QuantumScape designs solid-state batteries, a next-generation type that could store more power in smaller packages, and has partnerships with Volkswagen and Honda to build them starting around 2029. However, Toyota and Samsung are also racing to sell solid-state batteries by 2027 or 2028 using their own technology, and they have far more money and manufacturing experience. The company only has about three years of cash left before it runs out, so the real question is whether Volkswagen will actually start buying batteries in large quantities by 2029 before bigger competitors grab the market, or whether delays and cost cuts signal that Volkswagen is losing confidence.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not the fight here. Battery chemistry, manufacturing yield, and cash runway decide this one. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Toyota (Lexus solid-state, 2027-2028) and Samsung SDI (2027 mass production). Both target volume solid-state output before VW/PowerCo's 2029 start of production, which could close QuantumScape's licensing window. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Locked-in OEM licensing deals, especially VW/PowerCo's up to 40 GWh/yr agreement and Honda's 2026 partnership, plus $859M cash to keep testing.
What would change this call
Toyota launches Lexus solid-state model or Samsung SDI hits 2027 mass-production target on schedule. Would show a rival shipped solid-state batteries at scale before QuantumScape's tech reaches production.
QuantumScape's Eagle Line output fails to double in H2 2026 as guided. Would show execution slipping on its own near-term production ramp promise.
VW/PowerCo further cuts milestone payments or delays the 2029 start-of-production date. Would show its lead automotive partner hedging or losing confidence in the timeline.

Questions people ask
Is QuantumScape profitable in 2026?
No. QuantumScape posted a Q2 2026 GAAP net loss of $98.2 million and an adjusted EBITDA loss of $64.2 million, with full-year 2026 EBITDA loss guidance reaffirmed at $250-275 million as of July 22, 2026. The company has zero product revenue after 16 years, only small customer billings.
Does QuantumScape have any revenue?
QuantumScape has no GAAP product revenue, only 'customer billings' from R&D and licensing deals. Full-year 2025 billings were $19.5 million; year-to-date Q2 2026 billings reached $21.8 million, with $10.8 million billed in Q2 2026 alone, as of July 22, 2026.
Could AI replace QuantumScape's battery technology?
No, AI cannot replace QuantumScape's hardware, materials-science based solid-state battery manufacturing and R&D. Instead, AI is emerging as a customer: the company formalized a QSDC data-center power vertical in July 2026 targeting AI data-center 800V architectures with deployment near end-2028.
Who is QuantumScape's biggest competitor?
Toyota and Samsung SDI pose the biggest threat, both targeting solid-state commercialization before QuantumScape's VW/PowerCo 2029 start-of-production. Toyota is targeting a Lexus solid-state launch in 2027-2028 with roughly 1,338 patents, and Samsung SDI is targeting 2027 mass production, per July 2026 reporting.
Is joining QuantumScape as an employee risky?
There is real risk. QuantumScape cut 53 jobs in San Jose effective March 29, 2025 (about 55 total across CA, CO, NY), and third-party estimates put headcount at roughly 735 in December 2025, down 9.1% from 2023, while the company burns $250-275 million annually against no product revenue.
Who owns QuantumScape?
QuantumScape is a public company (NASDAQ: QS) that went public via a 2020 SPAC merger with Kensington Capital, raising about $1 billion including Volkswagen and Qatar Investment Authority money. Volkswagen Group of America Investments LLC remains the largest strategic shareholder, holding roughly 16-17% as of mid-2026.
