The call

Quess runs the payroll backbone of Indian staffing profitably, but its fastest growing, highest margin business faces clients who would rather retrain their own people than hire through it.

Quess Corp finds workers for companies in India, especially for office jobs and IT roles at big client companies. The boring part of their business, handling payroll and paperwork rules, is hard to replace and keeps them safe. But the exciting, moneymaking part, sending IT workers to client companies that want to grow their own teams overseas, is in real trouble: those clients are starting to train their current employees using AI instead of hiring new people from outside. If the high-profit staffing business stops growing in the next few quarters, the whole investment case falls apart.

Why
01
AI pressure: Internal GCC reskilling programs (client-side AI upskilling, not a named AI vendor). GCCs face a 40-43% AI skills gap and are choosing to retrain existing staff instead of hiring through Quess. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: TeamLease and FirstMeridian. Three firms split a commoditized $5bn Indian staffing market with near identical compliance and payroll setups. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep payroll, compliance, and statutory registration infrastructure across India that is slow and costly for clients to replace.
What would change this call
Quess Professional Staffing segment revenue growth in Q1-Q3 FY27 (June, Sept, Dec 2026 results). Flat or declining growth would confirm GCC reskilling is structurally cutting into Quess's highest-margin business.
Hamara Suite reporting standalone subscription/software revenue separate from placement fees. Would show Quess escaping the per-placement staffing margin model toward SaaS-like economics.
TeamLease or Info Edge (Naukri) publicly announcing GCC account wins previously held by Quess. Would confirm losses are competitive (peer share shift) rather than only AI-driven demand reduction.
Key numbers
  • FY26 revenue ₹153.05bn, up 2.2% YoY (2026-03-31)
  • GCC roles are ~73% of current staffing demand (2025-08-02)
  • Top 3 staffing firms hold ~23% of $5bn market (2024-12-31)
Named risks
  • GCC clients substituting external staffing hires with internal AI-driven reskilling, per Quess's own July 2026 report. Severity: high
  • Leadership handover to new Group CEO Lohit Bhatia (June 2026) coincides with growth headwinds. Severity: medium
  • Further Fairfax/Thomas Cook stake sales could continue diluting controlling shareholder position. Severity: medium
  • Commoditized market with near-identical compliance/payroll infrastructure shared by TeamLease and FirstMeridian limits differentiation. Severity: medium
  • CFO turnover (Pai to Jain, Oct-Dec 2025) adds financial leadership instability during transition period. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Quess Corp profitable in 2026?
Yes. Quess Corp swung to profit in Q4 FY26 (quarter ended March 2026) from a year-ago loss, with revenue of ₹38.92bn up 6.4% YoY and full-year FY26 EBITDA up approximately 19%, per results reported May 5, 2026.
Could AI replace Quess Corp's staffing business?
Partially. Quess's own July 2026 research found India's GCCs face a 40-43% AI skills gap and are shifting from external hiring to internal reskilling, threatening the high-margin Professional/IT staffing segment that drives about 73% of demand, even as compliance and payroll functions remain AI-resistant.
Who owns Quess Corp?
Fairfax Financial Holdings controls Quess Corp through Thomas Cook India and Fairbridge Capital Mauritius. After an August 2025 stake sale, Fairfax's effective holding fell from about 56.98% to 51.56%, while founder Ajit Isaac personally held roughly 11.78% as of December 2024.
Who is Quess Corp's biggest competitor?
TeamLease Services is Quess Corp's closest domestic rival, followed by FirstMeridian; together the three firms hold about 23% of India's roughly $5bn organized staffing market as of 2024, per Staffing Industry Analysts data published August 12, 2025.
Did Quess Corp lay off employees or shrink headcount?
Reported core/corporate employee counts fell sharply post-demerger, from 171,134 in 2023 to about 147,831 by December 2025 (Revelio Labs), and from 371,050 as of March 2025 (stockanalysis.com), mainly reflecting the 2025 split into Quess, Digitide, and Bluspring rather than pure layoffs.
What happened in Quess Corp's demerger?
Quess Corp completed an NCLT-approved three-way demerger effective April 1, 2024, splitting into Quess Corp (staffing), Digitide Solutions (BPO/payroll), and Bluspring Enterprises (facility management and foundit job portal); Digitide and Bluspring shares listed separately on June 11, 2025.
