The call

Quip isn't being eaten by a rival, its own owner Salesforce has scheduled its death and is moving customers to Slack Canvas and Agentforce.

Quip is a workplace app that helps teams plan sales deals and solve customer problems together in one shared space. Salesforce, which owns Quip, decided to kill the product and move its features into Slack and a new AI tool called Agentforce instead. Because Salesforce is moving Quip's work into products it already controls, there is no way for Quip to stay independent or compete. The only thing that could change this is if Salesforce stumbles badly on moving customers over to Slack and Agentforce, but that seems unlikely given Salesforce's size and the fact that it owns both replacement products.

Why
01
AI pressure: Salesforce Agentforce. Salesforce is folding Quip's workflows into Agentforce and Slack Canvas as it kills Quip off outright, not competing with it. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Salesforce (parent company). Salesforce announced Quip's end-of-life in March 2026 and is pushing customers into Slack Canvas and Agentforce instead. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. None. Its own owner set the shutdown date and stopped new signups in February 2026.
What would change this call
Whether Salesforce ships promised Quip to Slack Canvas migration tooling through 2026. Shows how orderly the forced customer exodus from Quip will be.
Whether new Quip signups or renewals resume before March 1, 2027 cutoff. Would indicate Salesforce reversed its shutdown decision.
Whether Quip subscriber data is fully deleted per the mid/late 2027 timeline. Confirms Quip's complete discontinuation as a live product.

Questions people ask
Is Quip shutting down?
Yes. Salesforce announced Quip's end of life on March 3-4, 2026. New signups stopped February 17, 2026, subscriptions become unrenewable after March 1, 2027, and customer data faces deletion roughly 30 days after a post-cutoff read-only and blocked-login period.
Will AI replace Quip?
Salesforce itself says so. On March 3-4, 2026 it announced it is redirecting Quip's core workflows, account planning, deal rooms, and case swarming, into Slack Canvas and its Agentforce AI agent platform, both owned by Salesforce, rather than continuing to invest in Quip.
Who owns Quip?
Quip has been wholly owned by Salesforce, Inc. (NYSE: CRM) since July 2016, when Salesforce acquired it for an estimated $750 million. It operates as a business unit, not an independent company, and Salesforce disclosed no separate Quip revenue figures.
What is Quip's biggest competitor?
Quip's effective replacement is its own parent's products: Salesforce is steering customers to Slack Canvas (acquired by Salesforce in 2021) and Agentforce as of the March 2026 end-of-life announcement, rather than losing share to an external rival like Notion or Confluence.
Is Quip profitable?
Unknown and now moot. Salesforce never disclosed Quip's standalone revenue or profitability separately from its Sales/Service Cloud reporting, and as of March 2026 Salesforce announced the product's full retirement, ending any future need for such figures.
When will Quip data be deleted?
Per Salesforce's March 3-4, 2026 end-of-life plan, after a customer's subscription ends (no later than March 1, 2027), Quip enters 90 days read-only, then 90 days of blocked logins, then about 30 days before data deletion, meaning data loss could occur by mid to late 2027.
