The call

Rakuten Wallet stays alive on its parent's ecosystem and wallet, not on trading volume, ranking sixth in Japan seven years after launch.

Rakuten Wallet lets Japanese customers trade cryptocurrency and convert their Rakuten loyalty points into digital coins. The loyalty points feature is genuinely useful and different from competitors, but after seven years it has not made Rakuten a leader like bitFlyer or GMO Coin. Two big threats are coming: new rules in July 2026 will make it much more expensive to run a mid-size exchange, and major Japanese banks including Nomura and SBI are launching crypto ETFs in 2027 that will let regular people buy crypto through regular brokers instead of needing a crypto exchange at all. The one thing that could matter is whether Rakuten Group decides to fold the wallet into its main brokerage or try to keep it separate.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent or model is currently reshaping how Japanese retail investors buy crypto. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: bitFlyer, GMO Coin, Coincheck (larger Japanese exchanges). Rakuten Wallet trades a fraction of rivals' volume, 3,012 BTC versus bitFlyer's 109,177 BTC, despite 7 years of Points integration. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Parent Rakuten's capital, licensing, and access to roughly 44 million ecosystem users via Points and Rakuten Pay.
What would change this call
Rakuten Wallet's Bitcoin volume ranking versus bitFlyer, GMO Coin, Coincheck through 2026. Whether Rakuten Wallet is closing the volume gap or falling further behind rivals.
Whether Rakuten Group folds Wallet into Rakuten Securities within 6-12 months post-FIEA rules. Would show Wallet cannot survive as a standalone competitive unit.
Nomura or SBI launching spot crypto ETFs on JPX by 2027. Would show retail exchanges like Rakuten Wallet losing access as the entry point for crypto investors.
