The call

Mexico's fintech piece now belongs to Banorte, and Colombia's still loses money while Davivienda watches from inside the same joint venture.

RappiPay lets people in Latin America pay bills and move money through a food delivery app. The company had a real advantage by combining a delivery service with banking, but it is getting squeezed: Nubank and Mercado Pago already have tens of millions of customers and bigger money flowing through their systems, and now Banorte (a traditional bank) just bought the Mexico side in December 2025. Colombia is still bleeding money and still owned by the parent company, so the question is whether Davivienda, the partner bank there, will make the same move and buy it out like Banorte did, which would mean the independent fintech piece falls apart.

Why
01
AI pressure: Nubank's AI-driven underwriting and Mercado Pago's automated lending tools. AI-scored lending lets Nubank and Mercado Pago price risk faster and cheaper, squeezing RappiPay's card and credit margins. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Banorte (Mexico) and Davivienda (Colombia). Banorte already bought out Mexico's RappiCard JV in December 2025; Davivienda co-owns Colombia and could do the same. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 15 year distribution deal with Banorte keeps Rappi's app as the entry point for millions of users banks still need to reach.
What would change this call
Davivienda buys out Rappi's remaining stake in Colombia RappiPay within 12 to 18 months. Would repeat the Mexico pattern, showing the bank absorbs the fintech once losses persist.
Colombia RappiPay's loss narrows or widens in the next reported nine-month or annual filing. Shows whether the unit is nearing viability or heading toward the same wind-down as Mexico.
Rappi files for or completes an IPO in late 2026. Would signal the fintech arm still has independent equity value worth re-rating.

Questions people ask
Is RappiPay profitable in 2026?
Not in Colombia as a standalone unit: RappiPay Colombia posted a COP 15.4 billion loss for the first nine months of 2025, roughly flat versus COP 15.8 billion the prior year, per financials cited March 2026. Parent Rappi separately claimed four consecutive profitable quarters through December 2025.
Who owns RappiPay now?
Ownership split by country. In Mexico, Banorte paid $50 million to acquire the remaining stake in the RappiCard/RappiPay JV (Tarjetas del Futuro), with the deal closing December 2025. In Colombia, RappiPay remains a 50/50 joint venture between Rappi and Banco Davivienda.
Did RappiPay lose its Mexico business?
Yes. Banorte agreed in April 2025 to pay $50 million for full ownership of Tarjetas del Futuro, the RappiCard/RappiPay Mexico JV, and the deal closed in December 2025. Rappi retained a 15-year commercial distribution agreement but no longer co-owns the regulated fintech entity there.
Could AI replace RappiPay?
Not directly. RappiPay's core assets are a Colombian financing-company banking license under Superintendencia Financiera oversight and exclusive bank partnerships (Davivienda), which AI cannot substitute. Rappi acquired AI firm Fountain9 in September 2024 for operational automation, not to replace the regulated fintech unit itself.
Who is RappiPay's biggest competitor?
Nubank and Mercado Pago dwarf it regionally: Nubank reported 100 million-plus customers and roughly a $65 billion valuation as of June 2026, while Mercado Pago reported 56 to 64 million monthly active users processing over $200 billion in payment volume, versus RappiPay Colombia's roughly 400,000 users as of April 2025.
Will Rappi go public and what happens to RappiPay?
CEO Simon Borrero said in late 2025 that Rappi does not need new private equity funding and is evaluating IPO conditions for late 2026, following four consecutive profitable quarters. RappiPay's future structure, especially in Colombia, remains tied to that broader parent-level financial trajectory.
