The call

Razer remains a known gaming brand with real hardware sales, but its finances are opaque and its AI bet is unproven against both frontier labs and older rivals.

Razer makes gaming mice, keyboards, laptops, and related gear. It competes directly with Logitech, Corsair, Dell, and Asus in hardware, where anyone can copy the basic design and specs. The company went private in 2022 and bet over $600 million on AI features (a voice companion called AVA and a headset called Motoko), but those products face the same AI tools that OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are already offering for free or cheap to everyone. The one thing that could save the company is if those AI products actually catch on in a big way, or if tariff costs don't squeeze the hardware business so hard that it can no longer fund the AI bet.

Why
01
AI pressure: OpenAI, Google, Anthropic frontier models. Razer's AVA and Motoko AI companion projects risk being outpaced by frontier AI labs before the $600M spent earns a return. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Logitech G, Dell/Alienware, Asus ROG, Corsair. These established brands compete directly on mice, keyboards, and gaming laptops, with no unique lock-in favoring Razer. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Two decades of brand loyalty among gamers, over 20 million DeathAdder mice sold, and use by 8% of pro FPS players.
What would change this call
Outcome of the IEEPA tariff litigation filed Dec 2025, expected ruling mid-2026. Would show whether tariff costs keep squeezing Razer's US hardware margins or ease.
Reported revenue or user numbers for Project AVA or Motoko after their 2026 rollout phases. Would show whether Razer's $600M AI bet is generating real monetized adoption.
Any Razer re-IPO filing or acquisition announcement. Would show whether investors see a viable path to cash out of the 2022 privatization.

Questions people ask
Is Razer still a public company in 2026?
No. Razer delisted from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on May 13, 2022 after a privatization led by CEO Min-Liang Tan and CVC Capital Partners at HK$2.82/share. It has published no audited financials since; last disclosed full-year revenue was $1.62B for FY2021.
Who owns Razer now?
Razer is privately held following its May 2022 delisting. Co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan and non-executive director Kaling Lim collectively held nearly 57% of shares at the time of the buyout deal with CVC Capital Partners, as of April 2022.
Could AI replace Razer's products?
Razer's physical hardware (mice, keyboards, laptops) is largely AI-immune, but its growth bets, Project AVA (agentic assistant) and Project Motoko (AI translation headset), are thin wrappers on frontier AI models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, with no proven proprietary data moat as of March 2026.
Is Razer laying off employees in 2026?
No mass layoffs reported. Crustdata's tracker put headcount at 1,961 as of July 2026, up 7.2% year-over-year, though described as modest growth (Growth Score 7/100); Razer also hired 150 people for a new Singapore AI Center of Excellence in August 2025.
Who is Razer's biggest competitor?
Logitech G, Corsair, SteelSeries dominate peripherals, while Dell/Alienware and Asus ROG compete directly in gaming laptops. GlobalData notes Logitech is larger and more diversified than Razer itself, as of July 2026.
Is it safe to take a job at Razer right now?
Razer has grown headcount modestly (up 7.2% YoY per Crustdata, July 2026) and is hiring for AI roles, but it halted U.S. laptop sales in April 2025 due to tariffs and has published no audited financials since going private in May 2022, adding uncertainty.
