The call

Rebellion runs on owned franchises and founder control, with Alien Deathstorm's 2027 launch set to test whether that model still holds.

Rebellion Developments makes video games like Sniper Elite and Atomfall that sell millions of copies without needing to be blockbuster-level expensive. The company is hard to replace because it owns its own game characters and stories (unlike studios that just make games for bigger companies), has a track record of games that actually make money, and stays private so it doesn't have to fire people when profits dip like bigger studios do. The real test comes in 2027 when they launch Alien Deathstorm: if that game flops, their system of releasing a hit every year or so breaks down, and they might have to lay people off or change how they operate.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI tools (art, localization, QA pipelines). AI speeds up concept art and QA workflows in-house; Rebellion's leadership has said finished content stays human-made, not AI-generated. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Xbox Game Pass terms). Atomfall and Sniper Elite: Resistance both launched day-one on Game Pass; Rebellion depends on Microsoft's payout terms staying favorable. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Owns its IP outright and stays privately held, so it profits at 2 to 3 million units without shareholder pressure to cut staff.
What would change this call
Alien Deathstorm launches or is delayed past 2028. Tests whether Rebellion's hit-every-12-18-months model still holds.
Rebellion's FY2024/25 Companies House filing is published. Shows whether Atomfall's launch reversed the FY23 revenue decline.
Rebellion announces layoffs or restructuring after a game miss. Would signal the no-layoffs private-ownership model is breaking down.
Key numbers
  • Atomfall hit 3.7M players, won BAFTA (Apr 2026)
  • FY23 revenue fell 21% to £56.1m (Jan 2024)
  • 465 staff, 308 in game development (Jan 2024)
Named risks
  • Alien Deathstorm (2027) is the studio's next tentpole; a delay or miss would be first test of its no-layoffs run. Severity: high
  • FY24/25 Companies House filing not yet located, leaving revenue rebound post-Atomfall unconfirmed. Severity: medium
  • UK Video Games Tax Relief closes to new productions after 31 March 2025, full VGEC transition required by April 2027. Severity: medium
  • Revenue swung 78% up then 21% down year to year (FY22 to FY23), showing dependence on release timing. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Rebellion Developments profitable?
Rebellion reported group revenue of £71.3m for FY ending June 2022, dropping to £56.1m in FY2023 (down 21% YoY, gross profit £16.7m). It says Atomfall was 'immediately profitable at launch' as of May 2025, though FY24/25 Companies House filings confirming a top-line rebound have not yet surfaced.
Has Rebellion Developments had layoffs?
No mass layoffs were reported at Rebellion between 2024 and 2026, in contrast to Ubisoft, which closed its Halifax studio in January 2026. Rebellion's privately-owned structure and steady hit cadence (Atomfall, Sniper Elite) have so far avoided the industry-wide layoff wave.
Could AI replace Rebellion Developments' game studio?
Unlikely soon. CEO Jason Kingsley said in May 2026 Rebellion has 'no expectations to ever use gen AI on the screen' in shipped games, using it only internally for rapid concept iteration like visualizing level weather variants, not for final content.
Who owns Rebellion Developments?
Rebellion is privately held (Companies House number 02770940), fully owned by founding brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley since its founding on 4 December 1992, with no external investors identified as of May 2026.
What is Rebellion Developments' biggest competitor?
In tactical shooters, Activision's Call of Duty and Ubisoft franchises are the nearest large incumbents, though both operate at far larger scale. Ubisoft's struggles, including its January 2026 Halifax studio closure, contrast with Rebellion's steadier, privately-owned model.
What is Atomfall and how well did it perform for Rebellion Developments?
Atomfall, a post-apocalyptic survival game launched 27 March 2025, was Rebellion's most successful launch in its 32-year history, reaching 1.5 million players within days, 2 million by May 2025, and over 3.7 million players by April 2026, when it won the BAFTA for Best British Game.
