Redfin
Real estate brokerage and listings site, now owned by mortgage lender Rocket Companies.
Redfin now runs as a traffic funnel feeding Rocket's mortgage business, with its old agent-discount business dismantled and no independent path left.
Redfin was an online real estate brokerage that tried to undercut traditional agents by using its own employees on salary instead of commissioned salespeople. That advantage disappeared when Redfin switched to a new model in 2023-24 and got acquired by Rocket Companies in July 2025. Redfin's new strategy of combining home search, mortgage, and closing inside Rocket's system is real and working (13 percent of Rocket mortgages came through Redfin by September 2025), but it is not hard for Zillow to copy: Zillow already has its own mortgage arm and matched Redfin's conversational search feature in just four months. The one thing that could matter most is whether Rocket's leadership treats Redfin as a growth engine or as a cost to cut, and whether the FTC blocks Zillow's deal with Realtor.com that could make Zillow even more dominant.
Rocket's Q1/Q2 2026 earnings calls describe Redfin's mortgage-pipeline contribution trend. Rising share of pipeline shows synergy compounding; flat or unmentioned shows thesis stalling.
FTC rental-deal case against Zillow-Redfin proceeds to trial or is dismissed. Trial risk or forced unwind would show regulatory pressure undermining the Zillow tie-up.

- Is Redfin still an independent public company in 2026?
- No. Rocket Companies closed an all-stock acquisition of Redfin on July 1, 2025, worth about $1.75 billion in equity, with Redfin shareholders receiving roughly 5% of combined Rocket. Redfin now operates as a wholly owned Rocket subsidiary, keeping its brand and Seattle headquarters.
- Is Redfin profitable?
- Not historically. Redfin posted a $26.5 million adjusted EBITDA loss for full-year 2024, improved from a $76.4 million loss in 2023, and a $33 million net loss in Q1 2024. No public 2026 profitability figures exist since it now reports inside Rocket Companies.
- Who is Redfin's biggest competitor?
- Zillow, with about 241 million monthly visits versus Redfin's 60.12 million in June 2026, per Semrush. Compass is also a growing threat, controlling roughly 29% of US transaction sides after acquiring Anywhere Real Estate in January 2026.
- Could AI replace Redfin's search or agents?
- AI is commoditizing search fast: Redfin launched Sierra AI Conversational Search in November 2025, but Zillow shipped a matching AI Mode by March 2026, just four months later. Licensed brokerage and fiduciary duties still legally require human agents, per real estate regulation.
- Who owns Redfin now?
- Rocket Companies (NYSE: RKT) owns Redfin outright since the acquisition closed July 1, 2025. Redfin's former shareholders hold about 5% of the combined Rocket entity, and Redfin no longer trades separately under RDFN.
- Why did Redfin's longtime CEO leave?
- Glenn Kelman stepped down January 16, 2026 after 20 years leading Redfin, with Rocket CEO Varun Krishna taking over as interim CEO. Kelman later joined venture firm Greylock as executive in residence in June 2026.
