The call

Remilk has the paperwork and a real product on real shelves, but Strauss got a competing product to Israeli stores first and the economics of fermenting at scale are still unproven.

Remilk uses fermentation to grow milk proteins in tanks instead of from cows. The company got regulatory approval and shipped its first product in late 2025, but this is not hard to copy: Strauss Group, one of Israel's biggest dairies, already shipped a competing product weeks earlier, and giant companies like Danone and Nestlé can do the same. The real question is whether Remilk can make money at this, since similar food startups with more funding have failed. What matters next is whether people actually buy Remilk's milk in Israeli stores and whether the company can eventually make a profit on each bottle it sells.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI protein-design tools like AlphaFold help the whole fermentation industry design proteins, not just Remilk or its rivals. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Strauss Group and ImaginDairy (Cow Free). Strauss, Israel's number two dairy, shipped its own precision-fermented milk brand Cow Free in October 2025, weeks before Remilk's own launch. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Regulatory clearances in the US, Canada, Singapore and Israel plus a live retail deal with Gad Dairies give Remilk a head start on paperwork and shelf space.
What would change this call
The New Milk's sales performance in Israeli supermarkets, Jan-Jun 2026. Shows whether Remilk can hold shelf space against Strauss/ImaginDairy's Cow Free.
Whether Remilk announces a new funding round in the next 12-18 months. Indicates if investors still value the precision-fermentation category after Believer Meats and Motif FoodWorks setbacks.
Whether Remilk's Kalundborg, Denmark facility resumes operations with a firm restart date. Signals capital confidence and manufacturing scale-up versus continued pause.
Key numbers
  • $120M Series B closed (2022-01)
  • FDA GRAS status granted for milk protein (2022-06)
  • The New Milk launched with Gad Dairies (2025-11)
Named risks
  • Unproven unit economics at contract-manufacturing scale after only launching Nov 2025. Severity: high
  • Own Kalundborg, Denmark plant paused since April 2025 with no restart date, limiting scale control. Severity: medium
  • Strauss/ImaginDairy beat Remilk's Gad Dairies launch by weeks in the same home market. Severity: high
  • Sector precedent of capital-intensive alt-protein failures (Believer Meats bankruptcy, Motif FoodWorks closure). Severity: medium
  • No disclosed revenue figures despite PitchBook's 'Generating Revenue' label, limiting financial transparency. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
What is Remilk's biggest risk?
The biggest risk is losing shelf space and partner leverage to rivals before its own commercial deals mature. Strauss-backed ImaginDairy already reached Israeli supermarket shelves with animal-free milk in 2025, ahead of Remilk's own Gad Dairies venture, grabbing first-mover shelf space in Remilk's home market. Patents and regulatory approvals alone give limited protection if a joint venture partner chooses to sideline Remilk or partner elsewhere instead.
Is Remilk in financial trouble?
There's no clear evidence of financial distress, but the funding pace has been modest and there was leadership turnover. Remilk raised $11.3M in a Series A (Dec 2020), $120M in a Series B (Jan 2022), and roughly $20M more in a strategic round (Oct 2024), and four board members including the chairman resigned around the same time (Oct 2024). By comparison, sector leader Perfect Day has raised over $360M historically, so Remilk's capital base is notably thinner, which is why a new funding round exceeding $30M by June 2027 is listed as a watch item.
Who are Remilk's biggest competitors?
Remilk's most direct competitor is Strauss-backed ImaginDairy (CowFree), which already sells animal-free milk in Israel and beat Remilk's own Gad Dairies venture to shelves in its home market. Globally it also trails better-funded rivals: Perfect Day has raised over $360M with up to $90M more pre-Series E as of January 2024, and Formo has raised over $139M and is already in German and Austrian retail.
Is Remilk at risk from AI?
The AI-replace risk is rated unlikely, but it's listed as a building threat rather than a settled one. AI-assisted strain engineering tools, such as those used by companies like Ginkgo Bioworks, could let rival protein makers hit yield and cost targets faster, potentially eroding Remilk's lead time on its own fermentation process. As of the July 2026 assessment, Remilk's underlying fermentation process is considered its strongest asset, hard to copy even as its commercial execution lags behind rivals like ImaginDairy and Perfect Day.
Can a bigger company just copy what Remilk does?
It's rated possible rather than likely for a large dairy company to replicate Remilk's approach outright, since its patents and regulatory approvals provide some but not decisive protection. The bigger near-term concern is not outright copying but being sidelined by joint venture partners like Gad Dairies, who could favor competitors such as Strauss-backed ImaginDairy instead. Remilk's much thinner funding base, roughly $151M raised across its Series A, Series B, and a 2024 strategic round, compared to Perfect Day's over $360M, also limits its ability to out-compete a well-resourced incumbent.
What should I watch to see if Remilk is on track?
Two dated markers matter most: whether Remilk announces a signed, named distribution deal with a top-3 global dairy company such as Danone, Nestle, or Lactalis for US entry by December 2026, and whether it closes a new funding round exceeding $30M by June 2027. Also relevant is the planned supermarket retail rollout of its 'The New Milk' product with Gad Dairies in Israel, targeted for January 2026. These are verifiable checkpoints rather than predictions, and none of them are guaranteed outcomes as of the July 2026 assessment.
